Hi everyone,

I have been meaning to ask... does anyone have problems with some recently ripped MP3s in the last six months in terms of sound quality?

Most recent examples that come to mind include:

Nu Nrg - Dreamland (Rank 1 Remix)
Gouryella - Ligaya (New Remixes incl. Ferry Corsten Remix)
Benicio - Consequence (All A1, B1, B2 mixes)
Sun Decade - I'm Alone (Mirko de Govia Vocal Mix) (NOT Starfox's rip!)

I'm not complaining about them; I'm just saying that they're low in quality and I want to know... what determines bad quality?

Because they are all ripped at 192 kbps and by ripping groups and people who I presume have good equipment.

So how does that "muffled" sound come about? It sounds as though the sound was played through a very very poor and dusty set of speakers or something..

btw I have a Soundblaster Audigy soundcard and also excellent speakers so it's not my equipment..

p.s. I don't think the snap crackle pop stuff constitutes as 'bad quality'... I'd rather have that (like in the promo mix of ligaya) than all the dirty and unclean sounds of the tracks I listed above.

I don't think corsten_addict 's complaining.The lad just wonders why and how come they're low quality.
On the other hand you people are right.We can't judge something we get 4 free by people who actually put some time and effort! Peace

I'm not complaining - if you guys are wondering, I'm trying to figure out because I'm writing a column for a website.

There have been lots of questions as to what equipment is needed for ripping MP3s, and if a track has too many layers, it might be required to be encoded at a higher bitrate to sound comparable to its totally digital counterpart on CD or on vinyl.

And back to the issue of complaining... I for one wouldn't complain. I'm grateful for everything..

I wish people would just read what I said first.

It doesn't really explain why bad quality rips occur but the show you in detail how to achieve the highet quality rips with the associated equipment and software. My conclusion on bad rips is that they are using some dodgy encoder instead of LAME.

yep, jploveparade is known for making smart arse comments

yeah, those new ligaya rips are really soft! i rip from time to time and have noticed sometimes its just a bad press and you can't really do much about that. but also to preserve the quality you need to keep the peak/trim as low as possible meanwhile recording to minimize distortion and clipping. . so thats why some of these might come out with the volume kinda low. good cartridges and encoder also help. personally you ought to look at the levels in a good editing program like sound forge or cool edit and make sure they're as high as possible with abolutely no clipping. also keep the bass and mids EQ's at 12 o'clock and the treble at 1. filter out the frequencies with the software to bring out any low bass or mids when you're done recording.
