That's a tough question to answer because everyone has a different opinion and it's hard to describe, but I'll try.

Trance is probably easiest to describe. Generally trance is faster than progressive or house, but not always. Trance is very melodic, and most of the really pretty music you will hear is trance. Many female vocal songs, long breakdowns, and massive builds. Energy can vary from high energy to being fairly chill. Hard Trance just incorporates a harder kick and nastier basslines.

Progressive is a fairly wide genre. And although some progressive builds a lot, other progressive is more cyclical and repetitive. I think of progressive as more chugging and sometimes more driving. Melodies in progressive are usually not as high pitch and if they are they are usually more ambient or relaxed. Except for progressive trance, which can have more trancy melodies. It is way easier for me to listen to a track and tell you it's progressive than to describe it. There are breakdowns in a lot of progressive tracks, but they can vary in length, some long and some short. A lot of progressive you will hear has dark basslines and a deep feel, but, again, that varies.

Techno has more clanky sounds, like pans hitting each other, but not in a bad way. A lot more treble and usually less melody. There are some tracks with melodies, but they are usually of the 303 nature. Hard Techno is banging, but fairly simple. DJ's of this genre usually tweak their levels and use effects a lot while mixing. It becomes their own sound in a way. I think techno is more repetitive, if the dj doesn't alter it. A good techno show is priceless.

House has many variations as well. Most of the jazzy and diva type music you will hear is a form of house. On the same token, there are many house tracks that border progressive. Daft Punk, Moby, Fat Boy Slim, etc., are house producers/dj's.

I guess those are some guidelines from my point of view, but everyone's opinions differ, especially in the gray areas.

Not really. Moby produces just about every genre possible (he's even done a punk/rock album) and Fatboy Slim is big beat, although his DJ sets are more on the housy side.

Ok. Like I said, everyone's opinion is different. Moby has produced house before. I know he is diverse. You don't have to be a stickler about it. And my apologies on the Fatboy Slim. But his dj sets are definitely house. At least the essential selections from '01 with Oakenfold.
