i know that the general consensus is that 1999 was the best year for trance music. i am not necessarily going to disagree (i have a lot of cds and sets from 99), but i actually appreciate and like new sets and new music too. i suppose that my point is to just appreciate what is now (be happy now instead of merely complaining that the old days were so great). to be sure, the production value (at the very least) is better nowadays than it was several years ago, and that adds a lot to the quality of the music, so.....
what do you folks think?

I dunno. People are just going for a more commercial approach, in general. That's all I'm gonna say...

yes, onion will tell you 1974 was the year of trance.
quality of production has improved, more complex, involved, as you would expect as time and technology progresses.
sometimes though... it's the simple things in life that are often the best.
not sure i like where the sound of trance is going... yes, call it evolution if you will but some will like it and others will not.

Word. 1999 is far away from being "the best year of trance", at least in my book. There is no such thing as a "general consensus" on this topic.

The production quality of rock music is better today but The Beatles are still regarded as the best rock group ever.
There's something to be said for raw production techniques.

maybe the new/most recent trance productions r as good as the old but because we regard the older tunes as being so good they cant compare, even if technically they r as good.but back in the day,the trance was amazing

I do think that 99 and the years just before and after were better in terms of songwriting, more creative and imaginative use of sounds and more emotive. I found the music back then more "lush".
That being said, the music today is definitely better produced, the sounds are cleaner, the kickdrums tighter, production has improved vastly. There are also some very good songwriters these days.
For me, it's of like comparing 80's new wave with the pop which followed it a decade later. The eighties songwriting was diverse and the songs had real staying power. Then came the mass produced, disposable slow jams and super pop which relied more on videos than songwriting, and while beautifully produced, lacked individuality.
