Late '90's tech-house

Well, tech-house is pretty prolific nowadays, seems everyone and their mother spins the stuff or at least has it creep into their sets... but this isn't really about today's tech-house. The first time I saw the term "tech-house" was in the late 90's, when I used to browse Satellite Records online shop for new tunes (in really shitty, low-bitrate RealAudio files). There were a number of tunes in this genre, only name I can recall at the moment is Mark Ambrose, the stuff had its own distinct sound, different from the house/techno of the time and even different from the stuff we associate today with the term "tech-house".

I'm starting to ramble, I think, but does anybody have any idea what I'm talking about... or have any good recommendations for tracks/sets? I don't recall anybody really being into this type of music very much back then, seems all eyes were on disco-house, trance, prog, and garage.

Hell, while I'm talking about tech-house, would the more drummier, less repetitive, less melodic stuff that prog house DJs used to spin in 2000-2001 (Peace Division, Ben Pound, parts of "Communicate" and the beginning of "Transport 4") be grouped with tech-house or was that just another subset of prog?

Your answer would be most of the stuff off the Plastic City label. Check out most of the releases from artist such as Terry Lee Brown Junior and The Timewriter

Be sure to check out the album 'Jigsaw Pieces' from The Timewriter. This was originally released in 1998 and was re-released in 2006. This album is simply amazing.
