Review: Paul van Dyk @ Space 03/27/2009

had a really fun night!!!

got to space with my before 12am ticket at 11 and there was no line. got right inside within 2 mins. edgar was opening and it was pretty slow. :/ i really wish edgar would just bang it out when opening for pvd... i mean its not like pvd cant follow it up properly. but i guess edgar does what hes paid to because he always opens up the same way for pvd.

1:30ish and paul shows up in the booth. took his tech guys 15 mins to set all his shit up and finally he starts. paul was so fucking banging for the first hour... nonstop banger after banger after banger with minimal vocal breakdown fluff that only lasted 30 seconds or so before the next bang would come in. at this point i thought it was going to be a legendary set. unfortunately after about the first 45 mins or hour paul kind of slowed it down. started playing a lot of vocals and tracks like long breaks. he was working everything, the mixer, the keyboards, his laptop, jumping all around with a smile on his face. he was def having fun. unfortunately the crowd didnt seem to dig it all that much. within an hour of paul changing his style the club seemed to thin out. by the time he was done (5:15) the club was half empty. it was never a fully packed club. def no sardine fest like i was expecting. but i cant believe he only played for 3 hours and 30 mins. oh well. also people were really nice at space last night. of course its all the out of towners. anyone from miami you could spot in a heartbeat cuz we're just assholes like that. $8 beer, $8 water.

sound system sounded REEEEALLY crisp. it was perfect. this is why i love space. they didnt have it too loud either.

some funny moments... towards the end of pauls set they just take him out of the booth, onto the dancefloor, and over to the bathroom. never seen this before at space. is there no bathroom in the booth? i know the old booth when the room was long had a private bathroom, so what gives?

also was standing by the bar between the mainroom and front room and the little garbage scooper guy came by and was sweeping shit into his thing. i look down and i see him sweeping a $20 bill in there. so i get down and try to grab it and he says "no" so i tell him "oh i dropped it!" and he shakes his head and walks off. looooool. he wasnt having any of my bs. poor guy though. atleast he got a $20 tip. lol.

so overall it was a good night. maybe not quite worth the ticket price because paul could of played better. but im not going to complain. i had great company and just had an absolute blast! the moments of the night were def pvds opening and when he dropped binary finary.

heres some tracks i remember off the top of my head...
for an angel (x2)
the other side
forbidden fruit
time of our lives
wippenberg - chalahalaka
funkagenda - what the fuck
lmfao - im in miami bitch (x3)
binary finary - 1998 (pvd remix)
markus schulz - without you near
andain - beautiful things (gabriel & dresden remix)
that brinka-marinka-brinka track lol
oscar g - dark beat
white stripes - 7th nation army (live keyboard encore for 1 min)

pics, although shitty:

vids coming...

I am the biggest PVD fan, but call it like it is. IMO the first hour to hour and a half PVD was on fire, building up the energy & banging it out beautifully. But then he totally lost it & completely killed the vibe, playing really low tempo no-energy house and a bunch of cheesy vocal tracks. He even played some love song that was so horrid everyone was looking around like WTF. That garbage lasted over an hour. He did bang it out for the last 30 minutes, but that was too little too late

coulda been a bit better music but everything else was perfect that night. the sound was incredible. the lighting was good (not as intense as it can be to the point where its distracting). the crowd was really fucking polite. there was no line outside. it wasnt a sardine fest. everything space hasnt been for quite a long time it was that night. pvd did awesome the first hour and that was enough for me. coulda been a longer set, but im still happy with it.

i also wonder if the reason that pvd didnt spin so long is because space didnt pull in as much money. obviously the longer he plays the more he gets paid. yea it was sold out for weeks, but it was never really packed. admission was $100 at the door, so i guess they never really sold out. the dj mag pool party was 100% sold out. no one got in without a ticket. so the pull from the door probably wasnt all that great. the bars where never packed. i rarely saw anyone with a beer or a mixed drink. everyone had water. now then again the water was $8 a pop, same as a beer, so im sure space still did fine. but probably not as good as years past.

fuck it. i had fun.

I had a blast!!!!

First hour of PVD, was on fire!!! I remember tweeting
"HURRY, CALL 911. PVD IS ON FIRE." LMAO

I was surprised he played For An Angel at the beginning. I'm really bad with track names, but I remember ZOMBIE NATION. LMAO... hahaha I even have it on video. I took LOTS of videos and WOW!!! SIMPLY WOW!!!! When you see the ones I took, you're gonna wish you were there.

I got fucken drunk, so I don't remember the 2nd half of PVD's set. lol Man, that always happens to me when I see PVD. I get fucken drunk and don't remember the 2nd half! lol

I liked what I heard from Edgar V. It was pretty cool. He played several songs I really like, like SHANNON - LET THE MUSIC PLAY!!!

I went solo but I ended up meeting people. It was FUN! I got there at 1am, the club was sold out so they were only letting ticket holders in. Obviously I had one, so I went right in. Even though it was sold out, it wasn't sardine packed! I liked that. Everyone was nice, and the staff was really friendly with me.

I'll post my pix and video later.

Yea it was empty in there. We got in around 11:30 and the F*ck you pass was sweet. only bad thing was that in the start none of the vip areas knew we could go in there. ended up staying up in the terrace until about 2am. Edgar V was kinda boring and they were bangin it out up to.

the crowd was so thin we didn't bother staying in a booth, there was more room on the floor. Paul was ok. not the best. still a fun night.

now its onto armin.
