Hey St Andrew! How's the water?
| quote: | With the Walkerton disaster still reverberating five years later, another small town in southern Ontario is facing fears of contaminated water.
Residents of Stratford have been urged not to drink, or even wash themselves with water after a chemical spill seeped into the city’s supply on Monday.
Dr. Rosanna Pellizzari, Perth County medical officer of health, issued an emergency water advisory at noon.
The red flag came up after an area resident called in to complain that the tap water was actually pink.
The advisory was expected to extend until Tuesday, pending environment ministry test results.
"At this point, we are still determining exactly what chemicals may have entered the system -- and how much of them," said Rebecca Hill, spokeswoman for the Perth District Health Unit.
The source of the contamination appears to be a morning spill of detergents and waxes from a car wash.
Despite the scare, officials believe the contaminant wasn't likely to cause severe symptoms.
"It's just a mild irritant," said Hill.
But the warning still set off a minor panic, with residents rushing to purchase bottled water at supermarkets.
The scare reminded some of the E. coli contamination in Walkerton, Ont., that killed seven people and sickened more than 2,000.
"Maybe Stan Koebel came here," joked Julianna Murphy.
Koebel, Walkerton's former utilities manager, is serving a one-year jail term for his role in the tragedy.
