Dual Citizenship Questions

Does anybody know what Canada's policy is on dual citizenship? Through my mother i can get a british passport and am considering it only for convenience purposes.

Does anyone know if there are any long term ramifications of doing this, i.e. is it allowed, or if there are any problems, tax-wise etc...

im probably going to do it anyway, just thought i would if people have had any expereince with it.

thanks!

Canada allows citizens to hold multiple passports (multi-citizenship).

Nearly all countries require citizens to pay income tax on income earned WORLDWIDE.

However Canada has treaties with many countries that allows for taxes to be paid only in the country for which one resides.

One may still have to file income tax returns in all citizenship countries (check with your country of citizenship).

---------

I hold dual American-Canadian citizenship.

I must file income tax returns in both countries (USA and Canada), but I only pay tax in my country of residence (Canada).

so you fill out two returns, but only pay here in canada.

i currently only have a canadian passport, but throgh my mum i can get a UK passport. i was thinking of getting american too, because i was born there, but will do that after the british one.

Exactly.

You generally pay tax in the country of residence - but some countries have requirements to -report- global income (USA does), thus the reason for two tax returns.
