i have sympatico and i can't stand it
i mean i can download at fast speeds...or at least fast enough speeds (i mean im not going to complain because im only downloading at 100k, that's still bloody fast, although i have gotten a lot higher speeds depending on the server)
but sending is absolute bullshit
uploading is about 14k for me...which means to send a file 63megs (roughly a 70 min cd) it takes about 1 1/2 hours (ie. its too slow to stream without lagging)
i also just learned of the caps that they're apparently placing on sympatico
so i dunno what im going to do...probably move to a new provider when the caps are placed on both sympatico & rogers

I've had both.
I had Rogers Cable for about a year, but was about to move. I called them up and asked if they would charge me to reinstall the cable modem in my new house. They said no, but that there was a 'Transfer Fee' of $30. I asked 'Can you waive that?' and they said 'No'.
SO
I called Bell, enrolled for 3 free months, and told Rogers goodbye.
There are pros and cons for each:
Rogers is faster
Rogers Customer Service Sucks ass (Tech Sup line is always busy, so I had to call the Cable Installation line, and lie to them by saying I called the wrong dept, and have them transfer me using their internal queues, otherwise I never got them on the phone)
DSL is slow, and my Bell Sympatico often freezes at times. With Cable my download speeds seemed a lot faster (I dont know the stats tho)
Bell Sypatico Customer service is much better than Rogers, and they dont have any long interuptions like Rogers did. Also, I like their billing methods better too (pre-auth from my Credit Card - nothing better than spending the banks money)
If you switch, at least you get the introductory offers from your new ISP, but make sure that the switch is worth it in the long term
Hope this helps.

Like everyone says, there's pros and cons of each.
I've been using Bell now for about 2 years. Here's the pros and cons:
Pros:
I can download at max 120k/s which is alright. I have friends on cable that can down at 350k/s so cable is definately faster. BUT, you have to remember that you won't consistently get that max speed and it depends on who you download from. For example, my upload speed sucks ass as it's only 16k/s. I run an ftp server with it but like I said it will only upload at 16k/s so even if you have cable or a T3 connection you will only be able to download max 16k/s from me no matter what.
In these 2 years that I have sympatico, there has never been an interuption to service. I have never been disconnected or had any other problems.
The speed is always constant. ie, it's always the same. I originally considered getting cable first before I got dsl, but I know that for a fact that everyone in my area has cable so therefore at peak times it will be very slow. With dsl I don't have to worry about that.
Customer service is great, I never have to wait. There's always someone to answer your calls within minutes. However you will soon realize that they know just as much as you do.
Cons:
upload at 16k/s. AGAIN, THIS SUCKS ASS!! cable you can upload at 50k/s. But then again if you don't upload a lot and just download, then this shouldn't matter to you.
That's just about it, no matter which service you choose (dsl or cable), you will NEVER go back to 56k ever again. Trust me....

Hmm
Actually, one thing you guys should keep in mind is that when it comes to speed, it is limited by your computer processing ability.
If you have a mid-range Pentium III 500 MHZ computer with little RAM that hasn't been taken care of (lol yes that would be me ), then it really doesn't matter if you have the FASTEST internet connection ever, you wouldn't be able to process the data that is being received by your modem.
But to be honest, with the rest of the world still using fairly slow connections, even having a direct T3 line wouldn't really improve your d/l speeds unless you are d/l directly from a traffic-less server.
I am using Rogers @ Home and I honestly think you should go with Sympatico. I've taken enough bullshit from Rogers and I'm a network specialist at my job... trust me.
Oh yeah... if you would want to split your DSL connection with a router, that is easy to do. With Sympatico, they may even hire a guy to come in and do it for you at no extra cost. But with Rogers, it's unsupported. I guess that may not be that important but if you have others w/ computers, you could split the cost of 1 modem.
Cheers
