Burning Man 2011 - Tickets on sale Wed Jan 19

I know that Graham had started a general thread about Burning Man a while back and I did do a few searches to try and find it but alas could not.

Tickets for Burning Man 2011 go on sale this coming Wed at 10am PST

First 9000 are $210, next 9000 are $240 and finally the remaining are $280.

Is anyone planning to go this year?
If you are - where are you renting your RV?
Any advise from people who have gone in previous years?

Bobby and I along with some other friends (Oldschool420) will be making the trek for the first time.

Really looking forward to it and a little scared all at the same time.

Cool Burning Man Info

I was at Burning Man last year with a T.O. crew, I can give you some info. Feel free to use it or not, there's all kinds of ways to organize for such an event.

The most pressing issues with BM are tickets and RV's. As you already know, tickets come out next Wednesday and you shouldn't have a problem getting the cheaper ones if you go online that very day.

The RV situation is more problematic as you are already late if you haven't booked anything. RV's can be rented from a number of places (closest being Reno) but you'll quickly find out that RV dealers are not part of the gift economy BM is known for. Renting an RV for that specific period of time is very expensive and tied to a lot of conditions with regards to the condition of the RV when you return it (think security and cleaning deposits).

Cruise America offers RV's for the lowest price. They have locations in San Francisco, San Mateo (suburb of SF, 8 miles from the airport) and Las Vegas, to name these. Last year, we rented our RV late and we ended up picking it up (and dropping it back) in Las Vegas. From there to BM it is a 2-day drive or one very long one (which you are in no condition to make coming back). On the upside, the road is amazing.

This year, our crew rented 3 RV's (yes, the crew is growing!) from San Mateo (6-hour drive to BM). The Cruise America agent told me on the phone that we got the last 3 from this location. I don't know about the other SF location but I will assume they're out too. There are a lot of Burners coming from SF.

Something else about RV's from Cruise America, there isn't much difference in price between small, medium and large sizes so if you can still get one, get a large, the extra space will be appreciated by everyone on board and you'll need lots of room for all the stuff you need to buy / bring (namely, lots and lots of water but also some food).

Good luck and congrats on making the choice to go, it's one hell of a ride once you get there!

2 days from Vegas??

Google maps says it's a 9 hr drive..

It's 31 hrs from Toronto to Gerlach NV which is the closest city...

It is in the Black Rock desert right???

Looks like it'd be an awesome trip cross country...

Been to BM twice, once wednesday though sunday, and once monday - monday. Met my girlfriend there, and been dating since (over 2 years).

I stayed in a tent, without RV. It was rough, to say the least.

Length of stay at BM is very important. Some people like to stay longer, some like to stay shorter. The experience is very different !

If you get there very early in the week, and leave after everyone else you'll see the birth and the death of the city. Birth & Death are very quick & spectacular processes.

Unfortunately, staying there for a very long time means little sleep, little food & lots of alcohol. When done for 7 days, it really adds up.

If I was to come back to BM, I'd arrive on Thursday and leave on Sunday (thats when it is at its busiest, with most parties). Hardcore burners prefer early in the week, because it is a lot quieter, and the crowd is less mainstream.

Overall, Burning Man is an incredible experience. I wish for everyone to experience it at least once in their lives. Not everyone is going to like it. Those who will, are going to remember it forever.

BTW: One thing to keep in mind is that Burning Man is not a rave. Far from it. There are some rave elements: there are tons of allnight parties that play electronic music, but EDM parties are but a tiny aspect of Burning Man experience.

I'm getting initiated this year thanks to one of your friendly neighbourhood ambassadors of BM, which you can find on this thread. Et oui, merci bien !

Great summary, Ilyia. Want to do it more than ever now.

I've been 5 years in a row and will likely do another 5!

I've done RV's out of Vegas 3 times and San Fran twice. Vegas is cheaper but a longer drive... usually pay about $2K in Vegas and drive about 12 hours (with rest stops) each way while SF is $4K and about 5hrs each way. The shorter drive time going back is nice after a solid week of... well, everything you do there.

Usually go with 6-12 RV's which meet up on-site from various starting points and stay at 6 and F (although we may move this year).

BM is the only party/festival thing I would truely call a life changing experience. I highly reccomend experiencing it at least once. I have met what I assume will be lifelong friends from around the world and look forward to it all year. I will be getting my tickets this week for sure!

OS
