The resume seems fine, except for your name. The letter (I) and (L) in your name look the same. There might be some confusion with that. Maybe if you change the font?

I just graduated and I wanted to know how did you find your first job as software developer...
These days all they want is like 3 + years or experience, know how I can get a break???

Hehee.. Thanks for noticing that! Appreciate it! I totally forgot to run a spell checker on that thing. This resume will be submitted to 9 companies tomorrow. We'll see what's gonna happen, but my expectations are not very high at the moment, since students with even more and better experience are having tough time getting jobs these days.

Well, I'm in a co-op program at Waterloo, so it's a bit easier for us here, since many companies come and hire students from here.
As far as getting a first job with no experience - it's tough, especially now. You really have to work on your resume, and possibly "invent" some experience. Some people don't like doing that kind of stuff(though they think that exagerrating beyond belief is ok), but personally I don't think there is anything wrong with it, as long as you know that you are capable of the job. For instance say you did a project at home, or at school.. Well, in your resume you can say that you did this thing for some company, or something along those lines.

Now as far as the length of a resume goes, 2 pages is the perfect size. 1 page is too little(can't really explain what you did, and employers like explanations these days), while 3 pages is too much(employer might just stop reading past the 2nd page, and possibly miss something of importance on the 3rd page)


Heheh.. totally forgot to censor my address.. doesn't really matter though, that's not my permanent location, just a place I live while studying at Waterloo..

I don't see any "art".

Maybe if you use pink pages and print floating musical notes, and floating algorithms on the side of your page you'll have some art.

Actually, despite the silliness, he does have a point... obviously a sci/eng resume isn't supposed to look artsy but sometimes it doesn't hurt to have a little graphic or something else eye-catching.

Not that I would know since I suck at the whole resume thing, but I've seen it work for other people.

Well, I thought art was great as well.. but that was at the time when the industry was booming and you could have 5-6 interviews without any experience by dropping just 24 resumes. Those were the days !

Now art in your resume doesn't get you anywhere ! Employers want fancy words such as EJB, or .Net on your resume !

This goes back to your comment about business managers being dumb shits. It's sad that a company can release such a crappy product and have everyone jumping on it (just look at Java, my god), but I guess this will always be the case as long as the simple-minded technologically illiterate are in charge.

When they get a resume with VHDL, Spice, Matlab and HCxx, they scratch their heads and throw it away. Hand them a paper full of useless community-college skills that anyone can learn very poorly (like "Visual BASIC programming" or "Windows NT administration"), they start salivating.

here is what always worked for me. I know I might be in a different feild than you but that doesn't matter when it comes to high profile jobs(careers). The Point is when you are interested in a place do research on them. not what they do or what they treat their employees like......that's simple and any moron can do that. BE A FREAK. Find out info about them. Ask their competition about them. Don't drop off the resume any say to reciptionist"aaaaa can u give this to the manager" Phone them posing as a customer stating you have a problem with one of their employees......state to the secretary that you must speak with the Human Resources department head. Ask for the name. Note it. them either hang up or talk to them. either way is ok. Call the secretary back stating that they were busy and ask if that is you caould have their extension # and that you will try later. Act like you r somkebody not a quarky student. Talk like a pro. Now walk in to the place. Make up lies, say you are from a local union, university teacher aid, but don't I dentify yourself as a student!!!!! Make up any lie like on TV. Ask PROPERLY for the H.R. Manager. HAND THE RESUME INTO THEIR HAND. you know that new movie "catch me if you can" I haven't seen it but I get the just of it from the commercials. You can get into anywhere if you articulate and show that you are a pro. So that means a Suit kids, with tie!!! I have gotten into hundreds of places that are locked up and you can't even get into without prox cards, or past the secretary on the first floor with connections. Look I have problems picking up checks @ bars but when I go for a job....I get it!
