Mom who turned in $40Gs gets a $2Gs cash thank-you from bank

THE HONEST mom who turned in an estimated $40,000 in found money to a bank is getting her reward. Debbie Peliti got a call from TD Canada Trust's head office yesterday and was told the bank will give her $2,000 for her good deed.

"I didn't expect it, I didn't want anything for a reward," Peliti said last night before a celebration dinner with her family. "This thing just snowballed."

Peliti was walking along Kingston Rd. near McCowan Ave. on Monday when she spied a $20 bill blowing in the wind. That was when she noticed an entire bag of bundled bills lying by the side of the road.

She ran to a nearby TD Canada Trust branch to ask for help. The bank kept the money while an investigation was conducted to find the rightful owner.

Yesterday, TD Canada Trust vice-president Matt Chevalier cut a cheque for Peliti.

"We really wanted to thank this woman for being a stand-up citizen," Chevalier said.

Chevalier said the bank is "still investigating" where the money came from but the working theory is that it was destined for one of its automated banking machines.

Peliti -- a mother of six who is on welfare -- decided to use some of the reward money on a dinner for sons, Jeffrey and Chance, daughters, Colleen and Jennifer O'Brien and three grandkids, Matthew, Sydirah, and Israel O'Brien.

"It's not something we get to do very often," Peliti said of the family night out at the Mandarin at Eglinton Ave. E. and Birchmount Rd.

"We don't usually have family dinners," she joked. "We have shareholder meetings."

What will become of the balance of the reward hasn't been determined yet, Peliti said.

In addition to the cash reward, employees at the Irving Tissue office in Toronto are putting together a package including turkeys, Royale paper products and gifts for her two boys.

"We were really inspired by her goodwill," said Kelly Westlake, a national account manager at the company. "This way we can see someone benefit from the good things she's done."

The employees aren't providing charity, she stressed, only a reward for her integrity.

The kids say they are proud of their mom and her honesty.

"Do not take anything that isn't yours and if you find something, you should turn it in," Chance Peliti said.

Peliti, meanwhile, is not sure how the reward will affect her welfare status.

But when she cracked open a fortune cookie before dinner, it read, "When you combine reflection with action, you will get good results."

publicly donating it might actually be a much better idea .. or atleast making people believe you did

I mean, nobody claimed it - but any idiot can come up and say - HEY, its my money!

I would've probably kept all the money, but if I was feeling generous, I would've found a better place to donate it to, not to an aleady rich bank FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! What a dumb mom!

TD supports charities like the Children's Miracle Network and Friends of the Environment.. the money could have gone there. we hav a campaign running for it right now and I've been donating canned goods at work for the past week and a half..

but if it was really money destined for a bank machine then it wasn't really donated , just returned to the rightful owner be it an individual or a bank for that matter

Hey, maybe I should call in sick for work tomorrow, bus to TO and tell TD Trust that it was my money, I lost my paycheque ... GODDAMMIT! (sarcasm)

My point is, they won't find the owner, they is inconclusive proof to anybody - and bank didnt lose it - the person who lost is not stupid, probably got more money, doesn't need any police attention ... if you know what I mean. The bank wont let go of the money now, and they will not donate all of it to charity(ies).

That lady probably has a good heart, but her IQ is gotta be low ... no offense or anything, but she was either afraid or something, but she didn't do the right thing ... you gotta agree.

Tell me what you would have done in her situation!!!?

if she asked that it be donated all to charity, the bank has to comply, where are they gonna put the money? the bank is regulated federally and owned by shareholders and not one person..

and would you keep it ? how do you plan on laundering it ? i doubt the bank is gonna let you drop $40 K into ur bank account just like that ..

it's cash ... real crispy 20 dollar bills ... they will cover my regular expenses for a long period of time like groceries, transportation, bills, rent, fees etc. I am not stupid enough to go to a bank and say, "I WOULD LIKE TO DEPOSIT 40,000 BUCKS!"

Even better, I could use the money to go to college and get a degree ...

I am not stupid you know - I wouldn't go around spending the money - I would only get what I REALLY need. If you only believe me. I'd put it into some good use.

And I guarantee that you wouldn't make it home alive, or at least you'll lose most if not all money by the time you get there. Or even if you will, you will have 10,000 attempted burglaries in the next few weeks ...
