There's been a lot of controversy over the use of Tasers by law enforcement since the death of a Polish-speaking man at Vancouver Airport late last year. But cops in Durham Region contend they used the electric weapon to save a life on Wednesday.
They were called to a tense situation involving an apparently disturbed 17-year-old in Whitby. The teen was said to be so upset over a break-up, he allegedly assaulted a family member before grabbing a baseball bat and two large knives and threatening to take his own life.
When cops arrived, they found the bat embedded in the front windshield of the family's pick-up truck on the driveway. And while the distraught male was nowhere to be seen, he was still armed with the blades and was said to be a danger to himself and others.
After a short search, cops found him near the entrance to D'Hillier Park around Resolute Crescent. They ordered him to drop the knives but police allege he refused and began swearing at them instead. Officers watched as he held one of the weapons high above his head and tried to plunge it into his own skull. The wound wasn't serious, but authorities decided they had to take him down for their safety - and his. They tasered the young man, who fell helplessly to the ground and was taken into custody.
He's now undergoing an assessment on his mental state at the Lakeridge Health Centre in Oshawa.
