something about walking around downtown Toronto 2 years ago... there would ALWAYS be some dude blasting jungle in his car, that's something that was very unique to Toronto. Its a shame that in the past 2 years that I've been in Toronto, you would progressively hear less and less of it =)

SOS2, I think you are making some pretty big generalizations about trance and its 'peak'. Arguably underground yes, the 'goold ol days' are long past. But many would argue you that as far as hitting a larger audience goes, trance is building on a daily basis not coming down from a peak. |
I disagree with you on this, back then trance had a larger crowd in the rave & clubb scene. Compaire the numbers of production companies that offered trance events back then and now. You'll noticed the dramaticly change. Most trance DJs are now switching to progressive, and to tell you the turth ... trance is being more hated and progressive has taken off recently. Look how many clubbs in TO that offere trance nights ? DeepGroove,Fuzion and I are trying are best to offer nu & old skool trance at System's VIP room on a weekly bases.
I've asked Mark Scafie this ...
"What happen, you don't spin trance anymore ?"
"It's hard to find work in Toronto if you spin trance. In Europe, trance will always be big and you'll see the most well dressed ppl in those clubbs. I've grown out trance a few years ago"
Everytime I mention " I love Trance " to ppl, I get a really dirty look afterwards. (8/10x this has happen to me)
Maybe in afew yrs Trance will be huge again ... but I can't see that happening in the present.
Everything works in cycles ...

Good points brought up across the board.
I agree with you that trance was extremely huge in 98', and also progressive has dominantly taken over the Toronto scene (in a sense). Just because Mark Scaiffe grew out of trance that means nothing. Granted most of Toronto's night are progressive, but the little trance nights we have are huge which over compensate for those system prog parties. But thats not my point, I'm not in a trance vs. progressive argument.
I was pointing out a pivotal point in the trance scene, it's growth. I agree with you ya da ya da ya da that best anthem emotional tracks are from a few years ago. HOWEVER, the scene is still growing and for one reason and one reason only, Mr. Paul Oakenfold. (now let me finish before you explode). That brit ****** has done nothing but tour the U.S, the American market is and will forever be THE market by which all other economies look to. Trance is growing (whether that be prog or hard trance) in a much more significant manner than a few years ago (say 98)
Proof? Hmmm. In 98 the biggest selling trance album? What? I have no god damn clue. Probably some compilation, probably Gatecrasher, or maybe even a PVD or BT album. hahah Probably sold a couple of hundred thousand. I think albums are selling more, people are being introduced to it more and more, and thus although the party scene might be depreciating the trance massive is slowly growing in the masses. Predominantly, the U.S (and thus everywhere else).
That was long, sorry. hah You have just to acknowledge the strength of the monetary system in the U.S.
Jon
P.S That trance backlash you are referring to, is coming back huge. There have been reports (Gatecrasher, digweeds new mixed comp, new vinyl) that trance is making a comeback in a huge way.
