Who says dogs are stupid?
Sussed ... Red gets his teeth into freeing the lock on his cage, lets his pals out and woofs down snacks
By CLODAGH HARTLEY
A CRAFTY pooch escaped from his cage at Battersea Dogs Home — and let out his pals so they could raid the food.
The Lurcher, called Red, taught himself to unbolt his heavy door with his teeth.
The mighty mutt embarked on nightly mass escapes TWELVE times before the dogs were sussed through CCTV installed by baffled staff.
Four-year-old Red was caught on film lifting the steel bolt, pulling the latch towards him and swinging his door open.
He then undid the cage of greyhound neighbour Joel along with Alsatian Bear and golden retriever Barney.
Staff found NINE dogs running amok one morning when they came to feed the homeless hounds.
Liz Emery, from the charity in South London, said yesterday: “We came in to chaos in the mornings. They had lots of food, lots of fun and caused lots of mess. We had no idea what was going on.
“We set up a CCTV camera and were amazed to see Red at work. It was really very impressive.”
Red, brought in as a starving stray, always let the other dogs scoff the kitchen grub first.
Liz, who says the cage locks are now reinforced, said: “He was a real provider in every sense.’
