The Mayans had incredible knowledge of time and space that far outstripped their contemporaries, and possible modern astronomers. They spent ample time watching the stars, recording their movements, and learning the way that nature operates.

Do I think the earth will end as the Mayans predicited? No. But I believe some major celestial event will occur that day (watch this post come back to bite me in 7+ years )
