Eq Vs Iq

I have made it a priority to improve my EQ. Where do you stand on the EQ gradient? Personally, I need to work on a whole series of issues involving interpersonal relationships. How about you?

This year, I'm putting myself out there. I just came out of a two year relationship where I found a comfort zone -- a sense of long term commitment. On the other hand, I felt as if all the new friendships I was making at the time, had been a byproduct of my relationship with this one guy. I felt socially dependent. In addition, We were both at different stages in life, and an age gap of 10 years. The relationship became deterministic & uneventful. In essence, I felt too safe.

I am courting a new partner now who happens to be my own age. I am hitting the bars again, eating out, and traveling. On my professional life, I am now always looking to cut my teeth by putting myself in situations I would fret to be in. My focus on improving my interpersonal relationships, while expanding social networks as I go, has made me leave the desk and leave the 'grunt' work of others. Running a business is all about relationships.

"Emotional intelligence (EQ as opposed to IQ) is often more important in the workplace than job knowledge or expertise because it has to do with getting along with other people," Uczynski said. "EQ means having the ability to manage your feelings so they are expressed appropriately and effectively."

She claimed presidents rated among America's best always had a strong EQ, listing Reagan, Kennedy, Franklin Roosevelt, Lincoln and Washington among them - and even Theodore Roosevelt, Carter, Truman and Eisenhower, with some reservations.

Among those who didn't top the EQ chart, according to Uczynski. are Nixon, Johnson, Hoover, and, also with some reservations, Clinton and George W. Bush.

Scholars (such as author and psychologist Daniel Goleman) have written books about emotional fitness, but Uczynski listed three simple qualities needed to have the essence of this attribute: self-awareness, self-control...

I'd trade some IQ for some EQ.

IMO, you can only improve your EQ so much...a lot of it is inate...and if you're not exposed to certain situations/events it may not be possible to have the same 'understanding' as someone who has. It's not like a muscle you can just work out.

You can improve your eq with practice. Issue with others stem from inside ourselves. Being mindfulness others and ourselves takes practice. Education systems focus on facts and knowledge we get caught up in proving/defending that we are right. Communication skills such as listening are undervalued.

For example, let's look at this issue globally: Have we, In America, become reactives instead of proactives?
