humans consume substances and get a high from them.
so, through the course of the worlds evolution, did they both evolve together so suit the needs of eachother or how did the whole thing come about?
what other use does the poppy plant have on earth? why did it come about to have the propertys it posesses??
do these properties benefit the plant itself or do they exist only so as to give humans a high?

Re: Drugs & Evolution
I really don't think it has anything to do with evolution. Sounds like you're trying to correlate two things that really aren't related at all - obviously it's not a symbiotic relationship since those plants have to be killed in order to be consumed by humans. In fact, we aren't natural herbivores, and we digest plants very poorly in general. The poppy plant is more a product of agriculture, which in itself is more of an artificial technology than a natural evolution (true, it takes advantage of natural earth resources, but it's not a natural process).
We're really just talking about chemical reactions here, certain chemicals in the plants interact with chemicals in the brain, and that's purely coincidence. Cyanide kills humans but I don't think anyone would venture to kill that an evolutionary process.
Look elsewhere for philosophy and deep thoughts.
Edit: to put this more concisely, just because something happens doesn't mean there has to be a reason.

Survival of the fittest right? So if being psychoactive helps a plant or animal survive, then it will be more likely to reproduce and populate the earth. For some, like frogs and some mushrooms and stuff, it's used for defense so that preditors won't eat it. I duno.

THC in weed is a chemical used as a defense against certain insects that might eat it's leaves. So yes evolutionary development of chemicals within certain plants are used as defense so that they can survive. Mind you some chemicals are not used as a defense at all, since they might not have an effect on their natural enemies, while having an effect on us. It's all in the receptors.

THC is a survival mechanism. Look..
1. Plant makes THC
2. People cultivate plants for THC
3. Plants thrive
