Question New experimental CD sale concept - What do you think of it?

BMG - german music label - starts a new sale concept for CDs as a measure against illegal copies.

There will be 3 different types of a CD:

1) Minimum (cheap) - 9.99 € - without cover, only the CD

2) Standard - 12.99 € - normal CD with cover

3) Maximum (expensive) - 16.99 € - e.g. with thick supplement (booklet), internet specials etc.

This concept will be testing 1/2 year. First CD which is on the market is 2 Raumwohnung - Es wird morgen (german electro group).

So what do you think of this idea? Can you imagine to choose between three types of a CD when buying a EDM CD in the future?

that's easy.. people who have downloaded buy the cheaper version cause the price is a good alternative to the download; the expensive version is for true fans incl. special stuff which you can't download and the consumer get the feeling that the music industry has for the 'true fan' something to offer.

The way I look at it, the people who buy CDs will buy CDs, the people who buy vinyl will buy vinyl. The lameduck downloaders who don't buy anything, will continue doing so and being a disgrace to the scene. The easiest way to do that is take away their high speed internet but that won't happen. I don't think price will have any baring on those people because they won't buy because free is free to them. See I like to get the artwork with the CD, I can't stand burned CDs anymore because it lacks the artwork and everything. I think the only thing that price will do for people like me is that we can afford to buy more CDs but my problem is I own too many CDs and rarely have time to listen to my own CDs.

well 2 Raumwohnung is a cool group

But as a business model with 3 different releases of an album I don't see that being cost effective for the record label as in they have to generated more copies yet how do they determine how many of which.... market study I guess.

The bare minimum version I don't see having much success.

This actual may generate more profit for the label if all three sell real well.

I think you have to give the label props for having the balls to try something new because at least they are trying something.

I think the minimal cd would need to be even cheaper to successfully prevent people from downloading, 10 dollars is still a high price for music, especialy when you add up the total cost of the average tranceaddic't cd collection.

Hey, I've read about it before.

That idea came from a Brazilian composer, who also thought of breaking albums into tiny bits of 3/4 tunes so, in case you like just one tune out of the whole album, you could get it for an even cheaper price.

His label didn't quite enjoy this idea though.

I agree that CD prices are too high. It is no wonder that everyone downloads mp3s

Im all for the cheaper CDs. I listen to music through my Grado SR225 cans -great for monitoring music. Unfortunately they make Mp3s sound like crap. My ears can't stand the crap quality! I usually only download mp3s to sample music & check out the talent.

The new hybrid CD/DVD is the way music is heading. mp3s will become obselete with their compressed 'stereo' sound. I guess some type of new compressed 5.1 wave file will take it's spot though.

Edited ---> humans only have 2 ears so can really only hear in stereo, so it will be interesting if 5.1 audio takes off. It may only be for people with home Hifi entertainment systems. I guess Portable mp3 players may not change for ages..............
