Anyone play guitar?

Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone here plays guitar? The reason i ask is that i'm interested in learning how to play. I know its not easy cos my bro tried for a while then gave it up, more out of lack of interest than anything. I have a vague idea of whats involved at the start (like developing calluses). Any advice appreciated.

Cheers

When i first started playing a long time ago my mentor would write down the riffs out of songs by ear. Mostly songs in Nirvana's MTV Unplugged and Green Days Dookie..those are easy to start off with and learn some basics.

As, far as that goes, holding a lighter to the fingers on your left hand works pretty well (im serious) The only problem is that i find myself having to redo it after playing for long periods of time, because the calluses actually wear off, and everything starts to feel weird.

OH! ultra lights are a must have for beginners.

Used to. I totally stopped playing after around 1995. Kurt Corbain died. Metallica totally sucked.Lost interest in metal. And shitty punk rock bands like blink 182 started to get cool and kids suddenly thought playing 3 chord music was "talented"

Dont burn your fingers, do it the right way.

PLAY A LOT!

if you wanna do it the easy way, do a quick search on TAB reading and learn how to read tablature (sp)

the old songs are really great to learn in my opinion.

I play an asortment of reggae and 90's alternative...and have been playing for 5 yrs

once you get some easy basics down you can screw around with the guitar and make up your own shit.

have fun!

Play Flamenco (spanish) guitar. The real stuff (not gypsie kings/desperado b.s.) is the hardest and most impressive style of playing. If you play Flamenco well, then you KNOW that you are a good guitar player.

Playing rock n roll well will leave you unknowing of good you really are, because it's easy and stupid.

The most important thing in guitar playing is practice. Your fingers have to get used to the strings and your finger tips have to harden. At the beginning practice the basic cords so you learn transitions between them, then go into modified versions of those cords and practice again. Buy a book with cords in a book store or in guitar center type store, I've seen some that even have a picture of the actual hand holding the cord. In grade school, when I started playing guitar at first I had an old guitar with heavy strings, I played till my fingers bleed and then I had to take a two weeks brake for them to heal, take is slow and use light strings at the beginning and apply lotion to your finger tips before you go to sleep every night. In the future maybe I'll write some more tips for you for now I gotta run. Peace...

I agree about what you said about flamenco but rock being easy is an untrue statement. There are many kinds of guitar styles in rock, some are easy and some are hard as hell. If you tell me that playing like Steve Vai is easy then you must not know a lot about guitar playing.

I play guitar.

First started with a really cheap acoustic when i was 12 or 13, then got bored of it and didn't learn much, but then after music classes at school and listening to more rock I started again, now I enjoy playing

Learn the basic chords, and learn your barre chord shapes (very important, or at least it is to me...), and try to get a decent understanding of music theory, so you can start to understand scales etc, that's what I've done...

That's exactly the problem I had when trying guitar at school. My fingertips turned all red after a while.
Guess my fingers wasn't "hard" enough
