I don't really like hugs and kisses from *most* people. I find it quite unwelcome when my little sister or aunt rushes at me just to give me a kiss. That's why I learned self-defense

You really don't see it all that often around here, or in America much at all. I guess it was common for girls to give me hugs in High School (girls that were good friends, that is) but if a girl ever made a huge public display out of it *coughCitriccough* I'd probably dodge out of the way...
I just don't like that sort of attention, I guess. The answer is: No, it's not very common for acquaintances to publicly show affection...not even people in relationships with one another. Though, every now and then, you see two people mackin' in the theatre...that's why you get the XL popcorn tub - more to throw.
It's just how it is here in America.
