First it depends on how sweet (or not) you like your champagne. There are like 8 categories but some of them are rather rare to find. The most common are Extra-Brut, Brut, Sec, and Demi-Sec. I enjoy mine either Brut, or Demi-Sec.

Allow me to recommend a very good Spanish Cava (a Cava is sparkling wine made in the Spanish region of Penedés):

Agree with Woscar--if you want good *and* inexpensive, dipping into Cava can be a good choice (just don't go tooo cheap--there's plenty of terrible, sorority girl-marketed $3-type bottles of Cava to avoid)

can vouch for this.. I tend bar at the Four Seasons Miami.

another great choice is J Brut. its not champagne but sparkling wine nonetheless. both bottles will set you back about 20 bucks. the cheapest Champagne.. even Gosset will set you back 35+ dollars depending on where you live.

I think he's asking for a major brand that you can find in a liquor store that one can afford without it tasting like alcoholic ginger ale. $7-10 will get you 750ml a drinkable bottle of wine so does this hold true for champagne? The brands I'm familiar with are Cook's, Andre, Tott's, Korbel...

I'm probably a cheapskate but I can't see spending more than $10 on something that must consumed with in an hour. With wine I can enjoy left overs with meals the rest of the week. I usually only drink it at weddings but since my girl likes it I find myself buying it for her.

edit: I just googled Cristalino Cava $10, I'll have to look for that @ the liquor store. Funny how something can be staring you in the face that you don't see until someone points it out to you.

Le Mesnil Blanc de Blanc 2002 Grand Cru Champagne, France

it was thrown in, around the $50 mark and i'm keeping it for a special occasion. it got a great write up in the newspaper i read.

Champagne, technically can only come from the Champagne region of France. Bubbly Californians, cavas and such are not champagnes but by law can be sold in the US as champagnes.

A few decent vineyards or wines that are at the affordable level are:
Veuve Clicquot (their Yellow Label NV is my favourite cheap champagne), Taittinger, Laurent Perrier, Moet & Chandon, Pol Roger & Perrier Jouet. Should be able to get a bottle of their NVs for under $60 a bottle in the US.

I recently had Louis Roederer Estate NV from Anderson Valley and it was surprisingly good. I've found a lot of the Californian bubblies are actually pretty horrible. I tried one immediately after a couple of bottles of Dom Perignon '99 (that I don't hold with a particularly high regard) and it tasted like fizzy apple juice.

I'm a Krug Grand Cuvee man. One of my real favourites!

Sounds a great deal! Blanc de Blancs (Champagne made from pure Chardonnay instead of the usual blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir) are usually very tasty.

Haven't heard of this particular one but the year, the fact it is a Grand Cru and a blanc de blanc are the ingredients for a great combination.
