Judging from the summary on IMDB and of the book, it could go either way (I can't view the actual trailer from work). Either it's overly sad and emotional, or it's done with some style (as in Juno).

looks pretty depressing to me too, but there have been some amazing indie-ish movies about fucked up people in poverty, such as gummo... will check it out when i can

I would say maybe 1 out of every 1000 films made are worth watching and 1 out of every Million movies is actually worth going to the theatre to watch....this movie is not the one.
