i've actually surfed in montara in the morning and skied in north lake the same afternoon so i'm well aware of the climate difference in tahoe and sf. my point is no one actually "goes up the mountain in the morning and lays out by the pool in the afternoon". you go up the mountain to ski. you ski if the conditions are below freezing with fresh powder or storming. in neither case does laying out by the pool to work on a tan come into play. actually you'd have to be a pretty big tool to leave the slopes before 4 to go work on a tan.
