Inducing creativity and insight

quote:
We may recognize it as the "Ah ha!" moment—the point at which everything rapidly, and often suddenly, comes together to form a whole, complete idea, sometimes out of nowhere. This is also known as the moment of insight—the pinnacle of the creative process.

Anyone who's experienced this moment knows how addictive that feeling can be. For me, it's like being high on ideas—scrambling to dictate, transcribe, and extract as much information as you can from this mental epiphany before it escapes into the haze of unrealized theories. When it hits you—and you are in that moment—it's heaven.

It really is heaven, and highly addictive. A group of scientists is trying to induce it by inhibiting the left hemisphere of the brain in order to temporarily restrict our tendency to filter our perceptions into our pre-existing mental templates. Pretty interesting concept, but one has to wonder about their conclusions.

I am by no means knowledgeable on this subject, but having felt the overwhelming impact of the feeling, and wishing I could have it again, I found this article very interesting.

Very cool. Can imagine it is possible since University of Bristol managed to surgically suppress depression through use of electrodes...

Well, just as long as the process is temporary, you wouldn’t want to end up like Trancer-x.

Does LSD inhibit left brain activity? My most memorable experiences with the overwhelming moments of insight weren't acid related, although I have done it many times before.

Take that as a sign that you have strong enough powers of observation as is, and you don't need acid for them to manifest into "overwhelming moments of insight".

Are they actually making you more creative, or merely inhibiting your ability to recognise a shit idea?

Part of the author's criticism of the experiment is that simply inhibiting left brain activity doesn't make people more creative, and that just because people would manifest some form of expression (painting, etc) that doesn't make it more creative. Anyone can put paint on a canvas. That doesn't make it artistic or demonstrate enhanced creativity.

I'm not sure if LSD was what led to this creativity, but his work is pretty amazing imo.
