I'm not sure that lasers would be the best way to broadcast, because they have a narrow non-dissipating beam. It would be a better way of communicating, but senders must focus their beam on a single solar system, so it may be better than radio for communicating between two solar systems who are aware of each other, but not for a general broadcast message. Except if you would have 500 laser beams each beaming its message to a specific star...

Hmm, now that I think about it, 500 beams isn't that much and could cover most of the nearest planets...
