This is just a thought earlier today... Was kinda bored, and "tired" from listening to the massively massive ASOT show...

I was thinking, DVDs are getting more popular today, and we have begun to strive to put more space on CDs, 74 to 80 to 90 or higher CDs. I was wondering, some day, will DVDs take over...??

I mean, think about, in the future, do you think we will have Audio DVDs and Portable Audio DVD Players instead of CD Players and CDs. Its the exact same technology as we have fit into the portable DVD players and the computer DVD drives. The technology is small enough. It seems possible. We could do it, so it would only or both play DVDs and CDs...? It would all make sense if we did a little technology work, and got it to be marketed.

I mean think, a Tiesto 4 or 5 hour mix CD on ONE CD that would play in any computer, CD player or car stereo...??? We've got MP3 players, its simple! Look at that, would be perfect... Cost might be a little much, but I think it would turn out for the better.

I bet Japan or somewhere has these already released or still in development but close to product testing (which still means ages till we first see one on the retail market). Oh well...

What does everyone think of this "idea" of mine, I wanna hear your views on this. Peace, laterz!

id just like something small, and something standard, that will play insanely long amounts of music. cd's are becoming obsolete cause of their size so it's hard to carry it around. i think in the near future cd's will be no more.

mds are coming in somewhat stronger ... but it's a new standard, out for a long long time actually ( 92 something ), and it's not catching on cause cd rules the market.


dvds are indeed becoming cheaper, I recently spotted dvd burners at 250 $ and blanks at 3 $

I dont think it will happen in the near future if at all. The main reason is that many more people have cd burners than dvd burners, and they wont ever sell music dvds because artists simply can't put up that much work(at least not mainstream ones, djs could do livesets i guess...). I'm sure the industry would flip too :~(

Instead of MP3 players using cds or Diskmans we will have minidisks with + than 1 gig capacity.. i ll be able to store all my livesets like that!!! WOOWWW (btw, that is years ahead, DVD technologies for burning will take a while to get cheaper)

First of all, the ATRAC (MD) statndard has been around since 1992 and it has gone through numerous revisions (http://www.minidisc.org/) since then. It never was made to replace CD but to replace the cassette.

Second, DVD-AUDIO IS out already! It's a VERY high-quality audio disc format. In theory, it IS possible to put large amounts of just above CD quality audio in regular 2 channel stereo on these discs and it'll sound fine BUT, DVD-AUDIO isn't being marketed like that. Instead teh extra space is being used for extra quality and very high Sampling Rates that we can't hear. Go to http://www.jandr.com/ and you'll see DVD-AUDIO players there. See what they're marketed for: multi-channel, higher-than-CD-quality sound. My personal opinion on this is: It would market better if it just sounded like CD and the extra space was used for length. Think about it: You can put hundreds of "Greatest Hits" tracks on there or a 6 hour DJ mix, etc. on a single disc! That should grab more attention than 192 khz 32 bit sound quality that CAN'T be heard. THAT'S why people won't buy DVD-AUDIO. I would love for this to happen, though. Why? Because since MP3's compressed audio, why not save CDs for 320 kbps 4 hours mixes and DVD-AUDIO for DAT (48 khz) quality UNCOMPRESSED 4 - 6 hour mixes? Sounds like a good idea to me!

I have tiesto's Dutch Dimension, Gatecrasher NEC, and Qontact sets on one cd and i can listen to it anytime, although only in my mp3-cd player, but i can output it to my stereo or to my car stereo (if i had one, that is)

I think that for music, they should use "mini DVD's" just like the Gamecube video game system uses them for its games. It would really be an advantage, since the disks are really small, 8cm in diameter, and holds 1.5GB of memory.

if dvd audio was commercially available with let's say 3 -4 times more music then cd ... that'd make the dvd audios let's say 3-4 times more expensive then cd or something more expensive at least that's for sure

would we want to pay that?

as convenient as it is .... I doubt lots of people would want to pay big money just for a new release or something

And who says that it can't be done? It CERTAINLY IS possible. That would be great because they can hold ~2.5 hours+ of 48 khz (DAT quality) music at disc size that's smaller than a CD. Does anyone on here remember when 8 cm CDs were sold in record stores? They can hold up to ~21 - 23 minutes and they were made for "CD-singles". SONY even made a special player for them in 1990 that could only play 8 cm CDs. Why can't the same happen for DVDs that can hold a lot of music? That would be awesome!

It should be used ONLY for releases that are presently 4+ CDs long, like Greatest Hits albums, multi-CD DJ sets, etc. NOT EVERYTHING. Releasing EVERYTHING like that would bring prices sky-high, which people wouldn't want to see...
