Hey all, I just got an e-mail telling me about a virus that isnt picked up by Norton etc. I dunno how old it is, but I know i've never had a virus on my machine, and yet when I checked, there it was. Read on:

Go to Start, Find or Search option In the file/folders option, type the name: jdbgmgr.exe Be sure you search your C: drive and all sub folders and any other drivers you may have. Click 'find now' The virus has a teddy bear icon with the name jdbgmgr.exe DO NOT OPEN IT!!!!! Go to edit on the menu bar, choose 'select all' to hightlight the file without opening it. Now go to File (on the menu bar) and select delete. It will then go to the recycle bin and delete there as well. If you find the virus as I did you must contact all the people in your address book, so that they can eradicate it in their own address books Sorry folks!!!!

I found it in my system32 folder.

Emails like that are ALWAYS hoaxs. Never do what they say.
But luckily for u, that file is only for visual j++ devs, so it doesnt matter if u deleted it.

while your at it u might want to delete other viruses like:

boot.ini
win.ini
msdos.sys
ntldr
explorer.exe
all that crap in ur system32 folder (just to be safe)

Yes, of course I'd trust an e-mail from a total stranger rather than the anti-virus software and online databases from well-respected security companies.

The guy can't even spell "promptly." Fuck. Do you believe the spam about penis enlargement pills too?

The sad thing is, some of these messages might actually be legitimately forwarded from idiots who actually followed the instructions and thought they got rid of a virus.

My first response was exactly what you guys have just said - that it's a hoax and just to ignore it. I know how important the stuff in the system32 folder is, and was rather aprehensive about deleting anything from it.

However, the e-mail was sent by my mother, not a complete stranger, and so I trusted her judgement and did what she said she had done.

Instead of typing a load of sarcastic garbage, how about a little constructive advice?? Not everyone is as clued up on such matters as you obviously are, so a little help wouldn't have gone amiss. And i'd appreciate it if you didnt call my mother an idiot.

basically, what anyone should do, is just google some of the text and judging by the results you'll know whether it's a hoax or not... (on a sidenote, i've seen people use 'google' as a verb too often... i think they might add it to the dictionary soon )

A good rule of thumb if you aren't sure is to do a quick search on google. If you had done a search for "jdbgmgr.exe", you would have come up with a ton of hits pointing out that the email was a hoax.
