I really don't think it has anything to do with evolution. Sounds like you're trying to correlate two things that really aren't related at all - obviously it's not a symbiotic relationship since those plants have to be killed in order to be consumed by humans. In fact, we aren't natural herbivores, and we digest plants very poorly in general. The poppy plant is more a product of agriculture, which in itself is more of an artificial technology than a natural evolution (true, it takes advantage of natural earth resources, but it's not a natural process).
We're really just talking about chemical reactions here, certain chemicals in the plants interact with chemicals in the brain, and that's purely coincidence. Cyanide kills humans but I don't think anyone would venture to kill that an evolutionary process.
Look elsewhere for philosophy and deep thoughts. 
Edit: to put this more concisely, just because something happens doesn't mean there has to be a reason.
