here is a thread for you CORwhores that actually has a topic...
i got some stuff stolen and in the bag was all my addresses, my SSN, an old ID, some credit cards and some other stuff.
i want to find out if it is appropriate to get some kind of hold or watch put on my SSN to monitor for possible identity theft. i think the credit reporting agencies charge for this service though.
so,
1. do you think it is worth getting this kind of service or insurance?
2. do any of you know about this stuff?
3. what are the 3 agencies for credit reporting in the US? i can only remember equifax.
thanks...

I use privacy guard. I find it to be prudent.

call you credit card company and cancel the cards. Place a fraud alert on your SSN.
i already did that with the credit cards, and i got a new bank account.
what is a fraud alert and how much does it cost?
edit: thanks for that link.

i'm pretty sure it's free. just call them up and they should be able to assist you.

most street theives grab the cash and ditch the rest which is traceable. Besides the places where they shop (corner whore, liquor store, and crack dealer) don't accept plastic.
