leaning toward asus or toshiba. needs to be thin/light with CDRW. (should have 512MB DDR...)
basically comes down to personal opinions on the subject.
appreciate input on this one... thanks peeps.
with taxes and shipping and all the crap, final price is less than 1500$ CDN
and it has 80gb HD/DVD burner/512 RAM DDR

I wouldn't buy dell here due to their annoying adverts, plus there's plenty of smaller local companies who sell better products for lower prices, just minus the name
my favourite laptop spec atm is
Asus A4781G-LH Notebook - XP Home (LT-060-AS)
Advanced processor AMD and powerful graphics from ATI deliver performance and graphics that rival those of desktops.
- 15.4'' TFT (WXGA, 1280x 800)
- Pentium 4 548 (3.33GHz)
- ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 64MB DDR
- 1024MB(512x2) DDR SDRAM
- 80GB HDD
- DVD Dual 8x Double Layer
- 802.11g wireless LAN
- WinXP Home
- 1 Year On-Site Warranty
Full Specification
Price: £893.00 (£1,049.28 Including VAT at 17.5%)
remembering that theres 1.7ish USD to £1

Nobody should buy a Laptop with a Pentium 4 processor.
The heat it would generate, the resulting fan noise, and the drop in battery time should put anyone off.
By the way Dell are generally seen as 'too cheap' by most people, in that they cut corners to sell at a low cost. I have never heard anyone call them expensive.

Do you really need a laptop versus a PC? I know you get the portability with a laptop, but you take a real beating in performance and price for the convenience. If you really don't need that laptop after all, then don't spend foolish bucks for less power. If you travel a lot, yeah a laptop is good. If you're a student and don't, then a PC is the better bargain.

A very good point, and of course most people who need a laptop don't need the weight (and cost) of a high spec laptop, unless you want to play NEW games on the road there is no reason to spend silly money on a laptop.
