Look I Got a Puppy!

The power went out 'bout 2 weeks ago and I saw the repair truck's lights.. so went down to check out the action.. Up walked this little pit bull puppy. He was thin, definitely needed a bath.. you could tell he was stray. So I brought the little bugger home. My dear mommy decided he could stay in the house.. which was a revolution in her pet policies.. so I named him for a revolutionary.. Lenin.

Now.. how do I keep him from shitting on our rug?

I'm serial.. I've never trained a dog before.

And depending on if you live at CFB Kingston your cost of living is probably very low as well, but even if you weren't cost of living in Kingston isn't that bad. Its only $30 which is cheaper than most nights at Stereo. Most of us on here who post about Stereo have put out probably hundreds and hundreds of dollars clubbing there just this year alone, and have never really complained for the most part. I know I sure as hell have.

Seriously, your best bet is to take him out every hour or so. Always take him out the same door and always take him to the same spot. It won't take long for him to figure out that when he needs to go he should be outside. Eventually he'll let you know by going to the door.

Another good tip, next time he shits in the house pick up the shit (I recommend using a bag or paper towel) and the dog, go to the area of the yard you want him to shit in and smear the shit on something there. If there is a tree or rock in that area they are both good bets. This will leave the scent of his shit there which is a signle to him that it's okay to shit there. Do this everytime you catch him shitting in the house.

Also, you need to get a good cleaner to deoderise any place he has shit or pissed. As long as he can smell his waste he'll think it's okay to piss and shit there.

He needs to be crate trained. That is, he needs to have ONE area that he knows is his alone, where he eats and sleeps. He'll never shit there.

So get him a cage, and get him used to it. Put him in there at night, and when you're not home.

For when you ARE home, you should put out paper for him to go on. Any time he DOESN'T go in the designated area, he needs to be disciplined. Put his nose in it and firmly tell him BAD. Any time he DOES go in the designated area, he needs to be praised and then take him outside to finish the job.

He'll soon understand where his business is supposed to be done, and as he gets bigger, he'll learn to go to the door.

It really doesn't take long to toilet train a dog, you just have to be consistent with the praise and discipline.

Definately a good idea. My dog loves his crate.

An extension to this:

Make the area of paper gradually smaller and smaller. When he misses the paper, scold him. He will associate the paper and outside with where to use the bathroom. When the paper is finally gone, he will understand that he must wait to go outside.
