Love Mind Over Matter.....

Have you ever pushed yourself to the brink? To the point where you`re out of breath, your back is aching, your sore feet in shambles oozing with blisters? You look to the finish line and think to yourself, "I can`t do it." ...

I`ve read this account about this group of coal miners, that really inspired me and made me rethink my own personal beliefs on my own limitations. What happened to these miners was that through some freak accident they were trapped underground. Calculating the space that they were trapped in, the miners realized that they had only 10 hours of oxygen left to live. To bide the time, one of the miners held the sole clock and was directly responsible to account for the time. To do this, he would draw a chalk line on a rock for each hour that had passed. As time passed with no hope of rescue the miners grew desperate and weary. The timekeeper, afraid of the chaos that he thought would ensue from the dying hours, tricked the other coal miners by drawing a chalk line every hour and a half. By the time the 9th hour had passed, the other miners were tricked into thinking that only 6 hours had passed. Surprisingly, the miners were rescued with only one casualty, the timekeeper. When the miners were rescued, they realized that it had been physically impossible to have survived the duration that they were underground (more that 10hours) but somehow through their mental beliefs, that they were supposed to have survived, the miners were able to will themselves to live longer. The timekeeper on the other hand simply died b/c he believed that he was supposed to die, since it was physically impossible to live longer than 10hours.

The point of the story is that one should never place limits on themselves. Accepting defeat and placing self imposed limits onto yourself is the most dangerous crime imagineable. Not only are you telling yourself you cannot accomplish certain goals, but you have already suffered defeat without even trying. My advice to you? Set your limits high and realize that your aspirations and dreams are unlimited, just as long as you can imagine them. The sky is the limit. =)

great story but is the story true? Where did you read it. I guess it could be possible, interesting nonetheless.

Cool story. I'm not sure exactly how possible it is since if you run out of air you can't really live for very long so i'm not sure how much truth is in the story.

Yes, that story certainly has all the hallmarks of an urban legend. How did the miners calculate the air left in there for instance?

Here are my thoughts on the issue of "mind over matter" for what it's worth:

I agree, now that i think of it the story does have an urband legend flavor to it, but so do many stories in the bible ex. parting of the red sea...

Of course just because you believe doesnt mean you can achieve the impossible, but you definitely, can do a lot more if you have the will. Some of the great believers like Martin Luther King never fully realized their dream in their life time, but their attitude has lived on through others.
