Yea when people gave me shit for living with my parents I really kinda thought "yea, only in the US is that a big deal, pretty much par for the course in the rest of the world."

Fuck the Japanese live with their parents for a hell of a long time, into their 40s sometimes.

Who cares if you live with your parents. The only thing that could get tricky is bringing women home I guess.

With a mountain of student loan debt right after graduation, I'm grateful my parents let me spend a year there to get my career started and regroup. I had 6 months of forgiveness before payments kicked in, but even still, it would have been tough right out of the gate.

I will say though, after about 10 months I was ready to go, and that was with having basically the entire basement to myself. After 5 years away at school living at home was a little too much.

What the fuck is going on in Greece, Slovakia, and Bulgaria?

Same here. My parents were extremely puzzled when I decided to leave home before marriage. To be honest, living with one's parents even after you're married is not unheard of... Although it's usually because roles are reversed and the child (and the in-law) take care of the parents.

Poverty I guess I have friends in Eastern Europe who have a full-time day job but can't afford their own apartment, or they just choose to save that little money they make by living with their parents, hoping to make enough to get out of their country one day.

Can't really speak for Greece though. I have yet to figure out what the fuck it is they do in general.

Pretty proud of Finland! If there wasn't a significant amount of people inheriting agricultural jobs and staying at their parents' farms, we'd probably be the same as Denmark.

Personally it's very hard for me to understand why someone who has the option to move out and no obvious and understandable obligations to stay with their parents, would stay. I moved away as quickly as I could at 18.

Actually, looking back, leaving home "early" may not have been the smartest decision I've made in life: The money I spent on my independence is more than enough to buy a car (which I can't afford right now), among other things.

It was a good dumb decision though

Also a big thing I don't think this takes into account is that a lot of people in Europe do not leave home for university. They attend unis close enough to their hometowns they can often stay with their parents.

In the US and Canada it is not uncommon to go to a university thousands and thousands of miles away from where you grew up.

I got myself into all kinds of (interesting and fun) shit when I moved out of home, and even more once I went travelling. Sometimes, those things went bad. A few times I wished I'd had the "parent buffer" happening, but it wasn't even close to an option at the time, and I'm glad for it now.
