Matthew Herbert

Soundslike/K7
We don’t need to present Britain’s Matthew Herbert, a prominent figure of the current music scene, as a mish-mash of genres—he simply is the ultimate word in hybrid forms. Whether he lends his letters of nobility to house music (Bodily Functions, a sensual masterpiece carried by the voice of the ever-faithful Dani Siciliano), rewrites the history of jazz within the framework of his Big Band, attacks the capitalist system by decomposing some of its most banal and shocking symbols (as Radioboy), or succeeds in making the crowds dance under his pseudonym Doctor Rockit, Matthew Herbert works on all fronts—following an ethos that could be perfectly summarized by his the name of his website: Magic and Accident. Reinventing himself with every new release, Herbert exemplifies the committed musician of today, carried by an immoderate, but hardly blind, love for his art. An electronic musician endowed with solid classical training, proprietor of the amazing label Soundslike, and first class showman, Herbert is also a DJ, and his shows are an exaggerated example of his wildly curious personality. Iconoclastic and provocative, his DJ performance—the only one of the festival—promises to be an exceptional event.
