Reading is a lot of fun, a good way to escape the real world and much more exciting than watching a movie.
So, i would like you guys to recommend some books here for others to read. It can be a book you just read, are reading or want to read.

I shall start it off.



Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts


This book has to be by far my favorite book. It has everything you want in a book, its has all the makings of a bollywood movie. The book is losely based on the authors life, an escaped prisoner from Australia who comes to live in Bombay.
Once you start reading it you will not want to put it down, thats how good the book is. I have recommended it to a few of my friends and they all love the book, and some say its their favorite too. So, if you want a good read pick this book up!! It a book that will make you want to read many more but none will be as good.

And Johnny Depp bought the rights to the book and is making it into a movie which is in production currently. So, make sure you read the book first.

Its a long book, but dont get put off by the size!!

Veronika Decides to Die by Paulo Coelho!

I recommend this book to anyone and everyone... really makes you think about life... great book with a great moral to it... I love Paulo Coelho's work

Haruku Murakami - A Wild Sheep Chase

I will usually spend literally a month, 2 or even 3 on the first 20-30 pages of a book because I find most books don't get me interested immediately. However, this is an exception. Murakami's writing style is so simple and concise yet you imagine every scene in front of you. He makes the mundane actually come alive and grab you.


I'm gonna throw in a classic here.. my all time favorite book:

George Orwell - 1984 ... remains the most insane book I have ever read.

William Gibson "Neuromancer"


Believe it or not when I was younger I was obsesses with science fiction and i read a shit ton load of them. I believe though in the past 5 years ive read 3 books...

"Lord Jim" by Joseph Condrad

Joseph Conrad is arguably the most skilled writer in terms of crafting beautiful senences and paragraphs. Universally refferred to as the "Wordsmith" of the English language, this nobleman turned sailor, turned writer has produced some of the most fantastic work that one who reads English can hope to read.

Lord Jim is a novel about a hero with a fatal flaw: indecision. This is truly a book for any who have ever felt helpless to change a terrible situation, only to find that that helplessness and indecision has made the situation that much worse. Moreover, this novel contains some of the finest descriptions of the crueler and more dangerous side of nature (the thirst of the desert, the beasts of the jungle, the violence of the sea), descriptions that will cause you to sweat as you read it. Just like a good DJ's set, Conrad's novel will take you on an emotional rollercoaster whose mindboggling ending is so powerful that it is more likely to rock your world than some very strong MDMA.

Also, remember that Condrad wrote many other fantastic novels, but Lord Jim is a good introduction to his style, as is Heart of Darkness the book upon which Apocalypse Now was based.

good idea for a thread , english nerds always need new material to read..

just finished "the left hand of darkness" by Ursula K. LeGuin, a pretty great sci-fi/fantasy novel that is sorta difficult to explain..all i can say is that it takes place in the future, and involves a race of beings that are human-like, yet genderless except for a few days outta the month when they randomly become either male or female for the sole purpose of mating..won the Nebula Award which is kinda the oscar for fantasy novels..bought it for a class but never got around to readin it til now, def worth a look for ppl who are interested in that genre..

Battle Royale by Koushun Takami - This is excellent, especially if you've seen the movie, as it differs and explores the psychology and backgrounds of the students much better. I'd say it's up there with one of the better books I've read, just because of the concept.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson (or any of Hunter's books for that matter. I've also read Kingdom of Fear, which is an excellent read for our current time, as well as Hey, Rube, which you'll enjoy more if you're a sports fan. I wasn't as impressed with the Rum Diaries, as I've always enjoyed Hunter's non-fiction and his take on society, as opposed to a novel by him.

Cocaine Nights by J.G. Ballard, though I've heard it's one of his more mild books.

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, kind like 1984, in that it speaks of a future "utopian" time where there's a caste system, everyone takes soma (drugs, maybe like Prozac and Zoloft) to combat depression and a sense of unfulfillment, everyone has sex with one another and there's no love. Also, sex is only for pleasure, not procreation, which is done solely in test tubes and are engineered to perform certain tasks in society. Read this one with 1984 and then compare what you hear in the news these days and it's pretty scary, considering Brave New World was written in 1932 and Orwell's 1984 was written in 1949. The most striking aspect is that 1984 is about communism and considering this country's "Red Scare," it's amazing to America follow the same path regarding spying and invasion of privacy that was, at one point, a reason why we hated communists.
