Astral Projection @ Arc review

I don't know much about psy-trance, but I thought they kicked ass and kept me dancing the whole them.

I arrived at around 2 am, and for a part of the following hour, the opening DJ played some "heavy metal trance", and lots of build-ups, breakdowns, and brief pauses.

Then at 3 am, Avi Nissim of AP went on the decks and kicked things up a notch. Excellent stuff, but the live PA was even better. The live part started at around 3:40 am, went until about 6:15 am.
Also, Lior's girlfriend provided additional visual entertainment by dancing on the stage.
There was a short time when the music went out completely. I'm not sure what happened. It affected the vibe for a little bit, but that changed soon after.
It was interesting that Avi and Lior went around and took turns on each of the instruments (or whatever you call them). I think I saw them use 4 keyboards, a mixing board, a CDJ-1000, a laptop, and 1 or 2 other effects boxes.
Also, throughout the act, various people talked with either Lior or Avi, but it didn't seem to affect the music.
(In live PA's, I always wonder if the performers are actually playing the music, or if that's all just stored somewhere and played from there. But anyways...)

The DJ that came on afterwards spun on the stage, using only CD's.

A little before 7 am, as I was about to leave, I heard the DJ in the Arcade play "Beat It" by Michael Jackson - original version!
I thing it was the closing track there.
I didn't spend much time in that room, but what I heard there didn't sound very ambient, as advertised. Tunes had quite a beat, but maybe there's something I don't know about that genre.

hitokiri and st0w where there, though coming in later, after being somewhere else earlier. Were any other TA's there?

I was there. I found colibri, and Jay later on in the nite. I think the whole show was amazing from start 2 finish. I never danced so hard in my life. My right leg seriously feels like its gonna fall off lol. Astral Projection was awesome live and on the decks. Only thing that kinda irritaed me was sum of the pauses when they first, than like twice the music went out. Idk what that was about. I was suprised at how many ppl actually showed up.
Track of the nite "Mahadeva"

The other room was ambient xcept for like the last 30min. And yes the did play MJ lol.

So many ppl asked me for K,xtc geez.

Overall=amazing nite

ohh I looked for TAs when I was there, but I didn't see any!! i'm so bad at finding people... ahh well, next time!

My boyfriend Sam, my friend Vipin, and my Burning Man friend Herb (+ one of his friends) all went with me, and we had a BLAST. we didn't get there till 3am, and alas, had to leave at 6am... but gosh, it was soo amazing. the only other place that i've ever danced to psy trance like that was when I was at Burning Man, and I kept thinking of dancing in the desert the whole night. heehee!

Mahadeva was great. It was funny, Sam knew more of the music by title than I did. The only other track I could recognize was "Let there be light."

I'd been @ Ferry beforehand. What a nite.

hahahahah... yes, she was definitely providing visual entertainment. I kept laughing when she would get down on her knees behind the mixing console and wondering exactly what she was gonna do next. hahahaha she did seem to be getting in the way at times...

I did see two CDJ-1000's up there, and I have to admit I was a bit disappointed in the performance. It honestly looked like they were merely playing the tracks off CD and layering some additional, simplistic sounds atop the tracks. Mahadeva, for example, sounded identical to the old CD versions except some random tweaking sounds throughout it. Unfortunately, if you aren't familiar with how psy-trance is mixed, it can be a bit surprising. It is rarely beat-matched in the traditional sense, and often not mixed that way either. Usually it is just fades from one to another, and because the tracks usually begin/end with no rhythm section, beat-matching isn't really required. And the crowd doesnt' expect it. Because of these things, psy is 99.99% of the time mixed from CDs. Very little of it is actually even pressed onto vinyl. And believe it or not, I've been to many a psy party where things are mixed off simply regular, non-DJ cd players. Although not at 'legit' venues, of course. That all comes with the warning that it's my own experience, and could be very different from that of others. Or fact.

With that said, I was very surprised by some of the newer stuff they seemed to be playing. It seemed to be more of a fusion from their older psy-trance and typical progressive trance. There were even some builds in there which one could definitely deem 'epic.' The crowd had their hands in the air, and it was quite a nice surprise. Although I'm sure some purists weren't loving it. Am I alone in thinking some of their new stuff sounded like... dare I say it... Nu-NRG?

Either way, awesome nite, was good to see everybody I did see, and I'm reallly looking forward to listening to their new album. AP back in full force
