Avalon

What's with all the negativity towards Avalon? For those of you who don't know me, I've been the resident here in NY since January of 2004. I don't think I know anyone on this board personally but after browsing it the past 2 days, I'm finding that there seems to be a lot of negative vibes thrown our way. I'm taking some of these harsh things about our club a little personally since I've been with the Avalon company for 6 years (I was one of their residents in Boston before this).

What's been bothering me is that the general complaints about our club is what's plaguing just about EVERY club I've ever been to. Bad crowds, shitty sound system, too crowded, too hot, etc....Well, the reality is that no nightclub is perfect. I've been to just about every single major nightclub in America including all 3 Crobars, all 3 Avalons, Spirit, Twilo (RIP), Sound Factory, Arc, Tunnel, The Roxy, Spundae (LA), 1015 (SF), Space (Miami), the list is endless......Here's the simple reality about all of these clubs. On certain nights, yes, they are too crowded, hot, and have bad crowds. I don't think I've ever seen a crowd worse than Space in Miami. Not only were the club patrons rude and obnoxious, but so was the staff. And if you want to talk about tempurature, when there are 2000 people packed into a club, yes, it's going to get hot. I've been to other major clubs in NYC in the summer and let me tell you, I came out soaked from head to toe. And as for our sound system, the only thing I can say is that it all depends on what our guest DJ requests to use as a mixer. Folks, it ALL starts with the mixer. It acts as a pre-amp and no pass filter, amp, or speaker is going to correct the sounds coming out of that horrible Pioneer mixer that most "big name" DJs request (ie Tiesto, Ferry, Bad Boy Bill, Judge Jules, Mauro).....Part of my job is to keep our big name DJs happy and I absolutely cringe when they ask me to install the Pioneer into our booth.

And we go through painstaking efforts to bring in the best international talent from around the world. We've had just about EVERY big name DJ on the planet (minus PVD and Sander) and we still consistently bring in diverse sounds. Running a successful nighclub is almost impossible in NY and when I stop to think about it, Avalon does do a good job. And believe me, I was amazed to see what Crobar has done with their space as well. Back in September, I was in awe of their decor, sound system, lighting, and design. But every nightclub suffers from the same problems on any given night. I'm positive that the VERY first review about the upcoming PVD event at crobar will say that it was too crowded and hot.

And just about every DJ that comes through our club raves about how much fun they had playing it. Now that's gotta speak volumes about how we do things. Nightlife and dance music in general is struggling a little right now and it's negativity from it's own patrons that's killing it. Come out, have a drink, and just attempt to have a good time, no matter where you go. That's all I ask.....

Finally, if you come to Avalon and are having a shitty time, come and find me and explain your gripe. Chances are I'll smile and say "buddy, lemme buy you a drink." Or even better, I'll give you my personal email where you can write to me anything you think we can do to make things more enjoyable.

best,

Ed

I personally dont have a problem with Avalon, but Tiesto in the summer was the worst clubbing experience ever, avalon oversold that event by thousands. And i had no problems with Space down in Miami, i went there everynight and fucking loved it.

hey eddie,

i actually don't find avalon too bad.... the only time when it wasn't enjoyable was when tiesto spun there last and it was sooo packed i couldn't dance at all.... but i gotta say, all your sets i've heard have been really good... i'm glad they have you as a resident there...

your definitely right though, avalon is not the only club that doesn't get a good crowd... seems like all larger parties have a hard time maintaining that mostly cuz there's so many more people that go. all good though.. its something people have to expect and shouldn't really complain about in my opinion...

I'll second that. I left after his 8th song, actually. The opener really tired me out that night. hahaha...

my feelings exactly.... ppl gotta stop worrying about the age of the person dancing next to them and let the music take control.... if theres something like overcrowdedness to the extreme, or rudeness all over, then ill agree in saying that the crowd on particular nights deserves complaints but overcrowdedness is all over.

AVALON is the shiznat!!!!

In my opininon it is the only club in NYC that delivers!!! Every time I went to Limelight and then Avalon I feel like I am home. And I have been clubbing for almost 10 years. IMO the club has the best crowd (no stuck up, cranked up models-wanna-be's and "vip's") the sound system does desire some improvement (who took away the speakers above the stage? now there is no sound on the second floor.) and they manage to bring some really good talent (where else I get to hear Chris Liebing).

So to all the complainers STOP GOING TO SEE TIESTO there and will be a really good club experience.

BTW Eddie Lee your sets are great keep up a great work.

's audio and lights are fine avalon
will never be an underground club
and that's fine however its location
is just perfect it has a history and
everything you need to have a good
time the only problem is t/ way t/
venue is promoted a fine crowd is
essential in t/ entertainment business
how is it possible to have atimes 80%
of the ppl to be men? t/ management
needs to make a priority changing this
and enforce a more equal ratiof guys
to girls at thentrance this can be done
easily by making sure every guy comes
with a female friend at very least or
even better for the all girls to be
comped before 12

you'll be surprised how things change
for the better in every regard ...

salu2

;)

ps. by the way i never cared about
the constant whining some ta's
have about t/ club since i gout
to hear/enjoy music

does it ever occur to people.... that when u give the reason "i hate the crowd at Avalon, thats y im not going", you NOT GOING isnt going to somehow change the crowd.... real trance fans NOT GOING isnt going to get the other ppl who go for other reason to NOT GO. go to Avalon, represent, and yea, the person with the reply on top of mine said a good idea on how to ge tmore girls (which i culd care less about, because i dont go to clubs to holler at chicks, i go to see DJs of a certain calibur that Avalon knows seems to be the only club to book).

Firstly thanks Eddie for taking the time to post... But as i stated earlier. The a/c system at avalon sucks, crobar for the most part is frigid why cant avalon at least be somewhat cool? And the sound last time i was at avalon it was horrid what type of limiter/compressor is it going through? Is it being passed through proper filters? As for the dj requesting a djm600 I have seen dj's at avalon and the same djs at other clubs and where my ears didnt hurt. How were the able to make it sound decent? Why cant avalon?
thanks
john

Hi Eddie:

I think Avalon is in a league of its own. It has great employees, a good vibe, and a positive attitude; the church has been supposedly "desanctified" so it has nice decor and architecture above it all. I think that certain DJs might prefer the euroclub feel versus a more laid back clubbing environment that I believe is AvalonNYC. Also, many reportedly complain that the sound permeation and ventilation is poor quality compared to other warehouse-converted clubs. I think they could do something "Renaissance"-esque with Avalon, and play up the fact that it is in a church with a stricter "clubber's code of ethics." This might then weed out disreputable clubbers. First is the sound quality of course- since that is what makes or breaks a clubber's night.
This way it gives the big name DJs a chance to choose which style they'd prefer- old school classic night or big euroclub feel. What do others think?

Edit: I don't know what they've done to the Avalon in Boston recently, but it used to be one of my favorite clubs. Why not recreate that vibe for AvalonNYC?

Edit: Actually, thinking about it more, the fact that the church was not built to be a nightclub probably means something. Perhaps move it out of a church?
