It seems in the trance world the opposite of this is true. When Cosmic Gate, Sander Van Doorn, A&B come and play people want to hear certain anthems and the next day they are able to track list the entire set song for song with 90% of the songs they played last time they were in town and people saying, “IT WAS THE BEST SET EVER!!!”
Why is this? Sure the familiar tune here and there is cool but hours of the same music from gig to gig? Knowing every song they play one after another? Where is the creativity, the uniqueness, the talent of creating something special?
I personally love hearing new music when I go out. Give me something I have never heard before, something that challenges me. Danny Howells at Arc playing 10 hours of new music every month, SnD at Twilo or Sasha’s residency at Crobar… new tunes every time. I love it.
As a DJ I strive to keep up with new tunes and create a set that is special for every event and enjoy the challenge of keeping ahead of curve in that way.
Anyway, just thought I would get the perspective of some of the members here. I am in no way saying this is true all the time or 'dissing' anyone, I just find it to often be the case, much more than with other genres. Anyone else see what I am saying or am I totally off base here.  |
LOL, welcome to 2004 bro. Ive said this mad long ago about EDM sets in general. Its the same ole tracks always being played. I think as DJs got more popular, they realize that a particular sound attracts people and to keep that attraction going for them, they give the crowd what they wanna hear. They dont have to go out there and even prove they are better than anybody else or have skill, they give the crowd what they are there for and thats that. Why make ure work harder than it needs to be ? I think thats a reason why most DJs nowadays could give two craps about dropping new tracks every single time in their sets because that extra effort at end of the day doesnt mean much to anybody else, esp the crowd. This isn't the case for every DJ(Carl Cox for ex. since I have rarely heard same track played twice from the man), but most can play same tracks and get away with it and not have it affect their turnout.
