I want Hatton to win because I am, first and foremost, a fan of him as a boxer. I have been following Hatton since about 00-01 when he was just getting his start on Showtime, have seen him fight live in Manchester, never miss his fights when he is on tv. About him being an asshole, thats absolutely not the case. He is well known as being a nice guy. Myself and my gf went to see the Barrera - Morales 2 in Vegas, saw him in person and he was the nicest guy in the world...drinking, chatting it up with the people that came up to talk to him. No idea where you are getting that most boxers are notorious assholes...guys like Floyd, Roy Jones, Zab Judah, etc, are all assholes....but I have a feeling they were pricks before they ever became boxers.
besides him being a great boxer, I am routing for him because I have feel that I have much more in common with the guy than i do Mayweather, and not because we are both white. He IS a nice guy, compared to Mayweather who is a complete asshole in about every way, and always has been. |
you can count the nice boxers on your hands; they are the exception to the rule. most boxers grew up being the toughest dude on the block, and where i came from the toughest guy on the block wasn't the nicest.
steven, you can clearly root for Hatton, you're a friggin brit, but almost everyone else is american. Boxing is like the olympics, there is so much national pride in the sport.
Zack, if you met the dude in person, and have actually been a fan for a while, then you absolutely should root for him. i do not believe most people on this board heard of the guy before because he's fought 7 of 44 fights in the US. Until the show and this match, i would be willing to put my salary on the fact that maybe 5 people on here knew who he was. Most people have absolutely zero reason to root for some random british boxer from the UK. How else can people on this board relate to him, besides race. That leaves race as the most logical reason to root for him. everyone can be PC and say that's bullshit and that's fine, but it's probably not true.
to ad to my national pride thing, most people don't have a particular favorite boxer. boxing isn't a sport where that sort of loyalty attaches. therefore, most people pick the local or national fighter to root for. i don't see much difference if you people were rooting against the US in the olympics. Shit, i'm sure non of you were rooting against him in 96 when he won the gold in atlanta.
