College ?

hey people, i have a question about college in the US...

well i thought about doing my studies at the U.S, the problem is, that things doesn't work the same way here in Israel, basicly i must serve my country's army for 3 years, starting at next year's october, that's when i'm 18, that means i finish army about the same time when i'm 21, so if stay and stufy here then it's cool since everybody starts at age 21-22, the problem is that if i wanna go to college in the U.S than basicly i'm losing 4 years, since i finish the army at october i can't start my studies at the time, so basicly i'll be doing my freshman year at the age of 22, so i'll be like older than anyone by 4 years...

anyway, i wanted to know there's nobody else except israelies that start their studies at 22 in the U.S, and generally does it worth it... starting at such a late age ?

there are some ppl who start later. my school was totally mixed. but you're right the majority are 18-22. but those who go to school later tend to take it more seriously and do better anyway so academically it might be a good move for you.

Usally the people who start school at an older age go to night school. As mellisa said they tend to do better because of less distractions in school.

i think its worth it to come to the states for college even if it means your 22 in your first year. well, then you have to ask yourself.. do u think u will be staying in the U.S after you graduate to work. if yes then you should... if you plan on stay'n in israel after college then maybe you should just attend college there. but yea... being a 22 yr old first year means shit... long as you keep your grades straight and do what u gotta do. ... but its kinda funny b/c im a korean citizen and in korea its the same thing with the army.... so i cant go back to korea untill i get my citizenship.(well, i just cant stay there more then couple months)

Don t worry about the age .

I m 21 and i m a freshman. I m from Turkey; the millitary is 1.5 year

so if you add all these i will be like 26-27 and if i do a graduate degree then i will be like 30 at my first job but i don`t care. I don`t hurry

Besides i have a friend from israel he is 24 and he is a freshman at my university here.He is doing really well. He is doing a double major ...

by the way, i was wondering what are the requirments for some colleges in the US, well i know it changes from each college.. so can you give me some examples of some of them, the requirments for each, and tell me if that college is considered good...

and about the age thing, well i've talked to a friend of mine which used to live in Jersy and he told me that the high school level in the US is lower than it is here and some of the stuff you learn in college there you already learn it in high school here, which gives me some sort of advantege...

They just recently released the "Best Colleges & universities" list (or something like that), so my advice would be to take a look at that. Usually it's posted in the U.S. News & World Report magazine. Has information like.. requirements for getting in, tuition fees, etc. etc. etc.

well, if your attending as a international student(student visa), colleges will not give you any financial aid so u have to pay full tuition. so, take that into consideration =) and tell us what you want to major in so that we can let u know which college is right for you and shit like that but most colleges require 3-4 yrs of english 3-4 yrs of math 2-4 yrs of foreign language(u probably dont have to worry about that one ) and 2-4 yrs of extra shit .... oh and you need the basic stuff like an essay, teacher evaluation letters, teacher references and non academic related refrences(community service..etc).... good luck

well i still don't have a serious clue bout what i wanna do but what's coming on my mind now is majoring in Medicine, Buisness- or something related or Cinema... one or two of those...

well the school system is pretty different here... i probably learn more than what you did in high school, but i dunno how the the conversion of grades go exacly...

for example in Math i learn integrals, vectors, trigo combines with geometry and stuff like that which as far as i was told isn't being learnt in the U.S through high school

anyway you get grades in numbers, i got around 90, that's about A-

my english level is pretty good and i good a pretty good vocabulary so it shouldn't be such a problem, although i'm pretty sure i'll have to take the SAT, i've done the israeli SAT (called psychometric tests), and got (again converting) around 1400, the problem is that they don't accept it in the US, since the english level in the SAT is higher and you don't have any hebrew in the test...

anyhow, if you can list that you talked about or give me a link that would be great...

yea... U.S is so behind in math compared to every other country... seriously.. when i came from korea to the states i thought the math they learned in the states was a joke LOL.. but anyhow... if you want to be in pre-med you can go to any college for your undergrad... it just that you have to do well in the college to get into med school. for business i would recommend... NYU(new york universtiy..business school is called stern) and UPENN (university of PA..business school is called wharton)... both are amazing schools for business... another good school for business is U of Michigan . im not too sure about cinema but parsons in NYC is a good art school but i think there are schools specificly designed for cinema and stuff like that. keep in mind that these schools are tough to get in.. but if you have a steady 90 avg through highschool you will def. have a good chance. the only thing is that schools in the states only admit a certin amount of international students... so keep that in mind as well. whats your percentage @ your school?? top 5% ? top 10% ? top 15%? well anyhow.. good luck... do alot of research ... there are so many school in the states.

I would not worry too much about age.. especially if you goto a big university in the US... There is too many people and no one asks what your age is
