The old firm in England

This is an argument that seems to have disappeared, but what are people views on letting celtic and rangers play south of the border.

Imo both teams have gone as far as they can go playing in the scottish league as it has turned into the worst league in europe (largely down to the dominance that both teams have). Until they get to play in a more respected league like the premiership they will always be average on the european front, as none of the really good players want to come to play in this god awful league.

What do you think about letting them play south of the border?

I can't see how it would be a bad thing as they could become two world class teams if given the chance.

I mean cardiff and swansea both play in the english league, so why not let the two dominant forces in the scottish league leave?

I'd like to see them here but I can see the argument of Division One teams who fight tooth and nail to get in the Premier League, it would be unfair to let Celtic and Rangers just walk in.

I can't see it happening because FIFA want to make leagues smaller so that there are less games cluttering up international fixtures etc, they've already said they want the Premiership down to 18 teams, but noone here is happy with that idea. Letting Celtic and Rangers in you would have to extend the Premier League to 22 teams because it would be totally unfair to deny two teams promotion so the old firm can just walk in.

that last point is a very important one.

As much as it would help, you cannot let them just walk into the league, it's unfair on every other team, and since I can't see them dropping down the league ladder and building their way up, then I Honestly cannot see it happening. The only chance I'd see would be maybe if 2 teams went bankrupt that their places could be taken, but again it's a long shot. I think they just have to be happy where they are, cos it requires too much of a shakeup to sort out

If this was to happen, Rangers and Celitc would be brought into the English Leagues in Divsion 2 or 3 or something like that.

Thing is that would bankrupt them.

Celtic and Rangers play crap opposition every week and get a lot less in TV revenue than English Premier League clubs because of it. But they are guaranteed Champions League football every year in Scotland which is a massive boost to their finances and prestige. Put them in Division 3 without any European football and their big name players, their manager and many fans will all leave and they will fold. So that's not really an option.

Well the simple solution is they dont play in the Premiership. The FA want the league to be smaller and theres no way Rangers and Celtic could join if there was only 18 teams.

I see little point in discussing this, the UEFA bigwigs have already said it is out of the question!

If it were to happen theres no doubting that at the moment Celtic would be better equiped to handle life in the Premiership. Though Sundays old firm game was closer than a lot of people (including me) thought, Celtic have a much more complete team than Rangers and it pains me to say that. If Boumsong goes we will only have Klos as a truly outstanding player, and our midfield is a shambles: most premiership sides would dominate our midfield!

This is the thing that really annoys me.

They let cardiff and swansea compete in the english league's, so why can't they let celtic or rangers start from the bottom and work up. I wouldn't mind playing in the first division for a year, but it's soooo frustrating when we get linked with quality players then they don't want to come here beacause of our league.

hmm..someone could suggest league with the best teams from england, scottland, whales and irland like we have in scandinavia (royal league).
the royal league is with the best teams form norway denmark and sweden, but i don't know if there's anyone else than celtic and rangers who would fit in a league with premier league clubs...

Also it would seriously affect the teams that are left behind in Scotland. The other teams in the SPL need those old firm games for income, and if Rangers and Celtic came to England they may start buying less players from Scotish clubs.

I can remember a few years back a muted North Sea League with the top teams from Holland, Belgium, Scotland and Scandinavia who all seem to have a similar situation. I think this would have been the best way to go by starting up a brand new league rather than the logistical problems of getting Rangers and Celtic into England.

The other problem is the number of times a season that Scots would 'invade' Trafalgar Square for their games with London clubs There'd be 3 thousand drunk jocks roaming round pulling mooneys in the capital every other week
