Toon: Club vs Country Row

South American duo Nolberto Solano and Clarence Acuna are set to give Newcastle boss Sir Bobby Robson another club versus country headache.

Both players are expecting call-ups for a Peru v Chile double header in a fortnight's time.

And Solano's involvement in particular will enrage Robson, after the player promised his club manager last year that he would stop making long-haul flights back to South America for friendlies.

The second of the internationals takes place just three days before United's crucial Premiership trip to fourth-placed Everton.

Former Peru skipper Solano - who turned his back on his country after a row with then national boss Julio Cesar Uribe last summer - has been told by new coach Paulo Autouri he is wanted for both games.

And despite a declaration from Fifa at the weekend that South American teams would stop calling up European-based players for friendlies outside the continent, Autouri has now publicly confirmed that he has every intention of selecting the United winger.

"I can't say much on that matter other than that I have spoken with those playing abroad, and they have told me they don't have a problem in coming over here," said Autouri.

FIFA & UEFA are gonna have to get this mess sorted out soon. Wenger had the same situation with Gilberto last month when Brazil had some pointless friendly against China, I think it was. Sven wants his full squad for his warm ups but they don't put in 100% and get slaughtered by a cricketing nation of Brit wannabe former convicts. Something's gotta give, and judging from the money the Premier & Champions League are generating, it'll be the internationals.
Heard the Aussie's want a 4 nation annual championship with 3 of England, Scotland, Ireland & Wales. Because of course, there'd be a lot of point to that.

this club vs country thing is bullshit. whats the point of tryin to develop your national squad when you cant get you best players together. actually we are not just a cricketing nation, basically every sport you guys created we are better than you at so shove it.
it sounds stupid for us to play home friendlies in europe but its the only way we can get our players together.
fuck the champions league, its lost its appeal. should be the best of each nation dukin it out like the days of old instead of this money makin machine

Club vs. country

Very proud words indeed. Clearly not particularly informed though. "Champions League lotst it's appeal"???! In fucking Sydney perhaps. Take a trip to London, Manchester, Madrid, etc. and you'll find there is passion away from the National game. Your problem in Australia - along with syphilis - is that your domestic league is equivalent to the Peruvian 8th division. Your quality players like Kewell - storming game on Sunday LOL - need to play in Europe to earn a living. If you had a half decent league in your part of the world, then all the Australian based players could get together on a regular basis. Until that happens, you will NEVER do anything in any major competition, and will live vicariously through victories in meaningless friendlies.

Well judging from your intelligent response, it would appear that the educational system in Australia is suffering somewhat. Oh, and by the way, we no longer ride horses. We have cars now.

we are by no means better than you at football but learn to take a defeat gracefully. im surprised noone rioted after australia won that friendly.
but the two sports that came from football, australia dominates and have done so for a very long time (union and league). and you take a game like cricket to other countries like australia and india and you cant compete with them

Actually there's only one sport most of us care about and it's football. Most people in the UK don't even know the rules to cricket, and many don't know the rules to rugby. Football is a religion here, and we're miles better than you have ever been. Let's see how far Australia gets in the next world cup, assuming they even qualify. If you make it to, say, the quarter finals, you should earn our respect as a footballing nation. Senegal got everyone's respect by going out there and taking on the likes of France where it really mattered. But people who get a hardon over a friendly just get laughed at.

Noone here professes to be any good at cricket, and hardly anyone cares. We don't have this inferiority complex. Start a cricket thread in the UK forum and see how many people sound like they know the rules. And as for the weather, noone here professes to have warmer weather than Australia - you seem to have a lot of 'issues' mate. I thought you Aussies were supposed be laid back?

actually i never said anythin bout us being better at football nor was i creaming over a friendly win but a loss is a loss and just bringing up everything to help justify losing is a bit weak. blah blah blah
again i didnt say that you had warmer weather i stated that you come here cause its warmer. normally im laid back but ppl like halifaxgooner piss me off. no need to call me god, wtf is that?
