As I consider more and mroe about what I'm gonna invest into for my home studio, I must ask the question of configuration.
I know how the general idea of the midi/recording/production studio inner workings and what's necessary.. but it's the configuration that I'm stuck on.
I'm looking at a few synth racks, a few synth keyboards, one keyboard controller, a computer for the midi transmitting/editing/audio recording from synths/etc.

Where I'm at a crossroads, is wether or not I'll use the software mixer I end up with or to buy a seperate mixing console, and use my computer as my multi-track recorder and my midi controller at once.

[controller]-->[computer]-->midi to synths-->[synths]-->output audio to computer in-->[computer records while transmitting midi]-->[computer mixes]

[controller]-->[computer]-->midi to synths-->[synths]-->output audio to mixing console -->[console outs]-->[computer records]

I'm wondering if it's all possible.
How are all your studios configured? block diagrams are welcome!

its computer -> midi controller out -> synth -> mixer (optional) -> computer in

if u miss out the mixer u need a device to input the audio into the computer

if you plan on having multiple Hardware Synths, then you're going to need a Midi Interface that will host them and to plug into your computer. mixing consoles aren't necessary, but having one makes it real easy to have all your sources routed to each other. anywho... here's how my studio is set up.

studio monitors -> mixing console -> computer -> midi interface -> 3 keyboard synths

You need to look at midi and audio as two different things.

Here is my audio routing:

Controller keyboard -> computer ->
Turntables/mixer -> Makie 1202 mixer-->Monitors
rackmount unit ->
rackmount unit ->

Since I can only have one thing connected to my sound card line-in at one time I always have to reroute the wires to what ever device I need to record. It's the only way to get a clean recording, using a patch bay or mixer will just lower the quality of the source.

Now for midi:

controller out -> computer in ->computer out-> controller in-> controller thru ->rack mount in -> rack mount out/thruv-> rack mount in.

and that is how my studio is set up.

I can't say I agree with NOT using a mixer or patchbay or interface rack to connect several units at one time. If you get a good enough quality patchbay/mixer/interface, you shouldn't have to worry about noise or interference. As long as you have balanced lines you're fine. There's million dollar studios that rely on patching and mixing consoles to route audio wherever they need it.

As for the configurations so far, I'm now better understood about how to get all my routing done.... i think.

the Mixing Console really isn't a part of any of the production that i do. it just makes it REALLY easy for all the audio outs. and the Midi Interface is kind of necessary if you plan on using multiple midi instruments.
