Question Using headphones with a E-MU 1212???

Bit of an oversight when i bought this soundcard, no headphone socket....
anyone suggest a solution apart from buying a new soundcard - would like to be able to stick on the phones when mixing, just to get a different perspective from my monitors, at the moment im bouncing my mix down to my iriver which is a bit of a pain
cheers

If im not mistaken u just bought urself a monitorcontroller with a built in headphoneamplifier. That will colour ur sound in the same way as a separate headphoneamplifier. Everything u put in ur signal path will inevitably color the sound. But in general the more u pay for units u put in the signal path the less they will color sound. That goes for soundcards and headphones to. And as they say the weakest link in the chain will be what u hear.

To be honest i went by a review in sound on sound magazine, its a passive audio controller which apparently wont colour the sound as much as say a controller with active components...also it would be nice to able to control the volume on my monitors by not having to go into the the E-MU patchmix all the time!
theres a review here but i think u need to be subscribed to read it

Its true that passive volume control dont color ur sound fed to ur active monitors. But still the unit features a built in headphone amplifier which has active components otherwise u wouldnt hear anything in ur heaphones. Since u have monitors and its been favourably reviewed I guess u got the right product. But i cannot imagine the sound fed to headphones is completely transparent.

Id imagine ur 100% right in saying that - however im not that worried about the sound going to the phones, ill be mainly using them for panning instruments and stuff like that

you can disconnect the monitors, and plug in a "y-cable" to the outs of the soundcard, then hook up the headphones. or you can just hook up the headphones directly into the one of the outputs. you will get sound in both ear pieces, but you have to choose whether you want to hear the R, or L... because w/out the y-cable you're not gonna get stereo sound into your headphones.
