You need a computer and kazaa. Download Fruityloops, Reason or Orion.. It's smart to get a midi keyboard too

Buy FruityLoops instead. It's worth it.

For professional tracks you will need:

1) A good computer with a powerful processor, and a ton of ram. (lets say $2000 CND)

2) A good sound card, something around M-Audio quality. ($500)

3) A midi interface for your computer. ($150)

4) A sequencer program like Sonar, Cubase, Logic etc. ($1000)

5) A wave editior program like Soundforge or Cooledit Pro ($?)

6) Hardware synths, like Novation Supernova, Waldorf Q, Access Virus C, etc. ($2000 each.. used)

7) A few softsynths in addition to, or in place of hardware. ( $ varies)

8) A midi keyboard ($250)

9) A program for drums, like Reason, or hardware drum machines like the Korg ER-1. ($800)

10) A decent pair of monitor speakers ($500)

11) Mastering software like Waves Gold Bundel ($1,500) or hardware mastering devices ($alot)

11) Skill. (priceless)

of course you could download all the software and cut corners in alot of places, but these are my recommendations!

so I guess you can pretty much rule out buying all that stuff and have your first production being released (that skill thing also takes a while to build)

Software would be a nice start I think....fruityloops

Yep, what dj chrono said is pretty much it - you'd waant to add soem external effects and processors to finish it off as well.

Ive been thinking about the best way to start, and im going to go with reason or reason 2, because although you miss out on vsti's (computer versions of real synths) and access to external midi output (being able to control other hardware keybaords/synths) you gain the ability to learn the construction and layout of a studio. Plus the use and creative use of effects/processing and some realistic looking and acting instruments.

Plus when confident which you ability, you can buy cubase and use rewire (a special in computer connection between reason and cubase) to connect the two together. Thereby allowing full vst access, midi and audio capabilities above and beyond those of fruity loops.

I would throw a sampler in there as well. Hardware and/or software, doesn't really matter too much anymore.
