Using Two Midi Controllers with One Sequencer

Anyone know if its possible to control different channels in a sequencer program with two different midi controllers?

Eg. One synth is used with controller A, and another synth used with controller B.

Basically aiming for live performance.

There usually is. Cubase SX allows you to choose the MIDI input, or select 'all', and Reason allows four midi devices to be assigned to busses which are then assigned to instruments. On top of the standard input.

Logic has extremely versatile MIDI routing capabilities, and you'd probably hard-wire your MIDI inputs to various instruments in the environment layer. Or create some kind of switching device perhaps... Or whatever you wanted!

What exactly do you want to do? If it's in Reason, Logic or Cubase, I can set up a similar situation here and let you know how I get on before you make any purchasing decisions...

Well a friend and I would like to try doing some live production, just for fun, at first. I am no stranger to FruityLoops, but I havent spent much time in any other program. Reason comes closer than the rest.

We both have excellent midicontroller already, and more than enough CPU power, hoping to use a laptop possibly as well.

Does anyone know of any PA websites? Info on doing liveshows ?

I can't help you with FL, but in Reason it's easy. You will need two MIDI ins though - or a controller with MIDI Thru. Or a controller with MIDI out and a soft thru otion.

Reason -> Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced Midi

Set Bus A and B to be your two MIDI ports... Or set only Bus A if you have a MIDI chain. (In this case, you must use different MIDI channel numbers on the two controllers).

Now on the main rack screen, set channel (x) of bus A on the MIDI Input Device to one of the Reason instruments, where (x) is the channel number you chose for the controller on Bus A.

So say your MIDI interface is a Sounddblaster Live, and you're running two controllers through on channels 1 and 2, after setting Bus A to be 'SB Live! MIDI Uart' you select BUS A on the MIDI input device, set Channel 1 to point to your Subtractor and channel 2 to point to a Malstrom.

For example.

Does that make sense?

As for doing a live PA, Sound On Sound ran a series of articles on it. Try this:

Hope it helps!

Wow, awesome. Thanks a million man, cant tell you how much I appreciate the trouble.

I was hoping to use USB interface rather than MIDI-in. But i assume it will work the sam.e

Again thanks!

Your USB MIDI interface should simply show up as another MIDI in, yes

Good luck mate! Let me know how it goes...
