I'd like to know, which software is good for basses like the typical Ferry basslines, or the Above and Beyond basslines.

I know the atmosphere has patches for basses, but I haven't gotten myself a hold of that synth yet...

However, one good VST I use is Triangle II Triangle II... Best part about it is that it's absolutely free

But the trick with making a very thick sounding powerful bass is layering layering and more layering... I usually tend to separate the bass into 3 parts: the sub (20-100 hz), the "meat" of the bass (100-300 hz), and the treble to make the bass more pronounced (1000hz-5000hz around)

I believe there was a very good ATRC bass tutorial posted a while back... If you use the search, you should be able to find it...

It all depends on what kind of basses you want to make.

Of course, the legendary TB-303 still has it applications, and there are numerous VSTi emulations of it (AudioRealism makes a great one). Novation has a BassStation (both hardware and software), but I tend to think it's more suited for the higher regions of bass (so more in layered basslines).
Atmosphere has some bass patches, but it's not it's main focus. Spectrasonics has another "rompler" called Trilogy that is made for basslines. It's really as good as Atmosphere, you can't really go wrong with it.

But for me, both hardware and software, the Moog (Minimoog and Moog Modular) are surely to be considered too. Arturia makes an awesome software version (it 95% identical sounding to the real thing). Maybe not as easy to get to gripes with, but boy, it can make some shaking stuff. The best thing you can do is check out those kewlness mentioned, and I think most of the ones I told ya are available in demo's too.

Except for the Spectrasonics site though, don't judge the stuff on the demo's they provide. That goes for most demo's of softsynths on their makers page. I dunno what they think, but those rarely show the real power of the beasts in question.

Spectrasonics Atmosphere is good for a few basslines, but if you want bass then you're after another Spectrasonics product called Trilogy. This is pretty much the end all and be all from what I understand, and it's next on my puchasing list.

Awhile back I prefered Albino.. but recently I have started using Pro-53... Just open the Basses preset file and find a sound that is close to what your going for and tweak stuff such as cutoff, filter envelop.. amp evelope etc.. also mess with unison voices and the analog knob.

And thats not all.. take full advantage of effects such as delay, compression and eq... and always remember that basslines and the kick are hard to please.. but once you learn more about eq it wont be as much as a problem.

I agree with that Trilogy end all be all comment. I also think it's important to realize that a lot of great songs use bass sounds from synths that aren't known for bass (which leads me to believe that at approximately 140 beats per minute it's more important about how the bass is played (legato etc.), how it's eqd, how it's compressed, how it's layered with a mid-bass sound and their relative eqs, and how the level is set relative to the kick).

For example, A & B used a Virus for the bass in "What it Feels Like for a Girl". The Virus isn't known for having robust bass, but they made it work.

Anyways, you can't go wrong with Trilogy. Having a Juno 106 bass that sounds 90 percent as good as the real thing without having to put up with a 70 pound beast made in 1984 sure convinced me to shell out the quid for it (and sell my Juno).

Anything with a variety of wave shapes and different kinds of light modulations works well for bass. It also must be able to create them accurate, so anything based on pregenerated samples is usually out the window. Your best best is a virtual analogue synthesizer like NiNja, Pro53, Reaktor 4, Discovery, 0xdBass, etc...

The key to a good bass sound is simiplicity, really. Too many overtones or too complex a waveform will render a bassline ineffective and poor sounding.

Reverb/delay is a dangerous effect to use on bass. If you use it, try to put a high pass filter on the bass when the kick is play so that you don't get conflicts.
