Gate Effects Plugin question

Hey guys,
I was curious to know if any of you knew of an effects plugin that would allow for gated effects. I currently use CamelSpace, but I really don't like the sound - it sounds a bit cheap if you know what I mean. I know there are tons of VST/DXi instruments that can make some cool gates, but I'm looking strictly for an effects plugin so I can gate any instrument I want.

Here is a quick example I came up with. This is a CamelSpace gate on an Atmopshere instrument - I think it sounds a bit 'cheap' - perhaps I'm wrong.

CLICK HERE -=> gated.mp3

I'd suggest a MIDI gate, they're a lot easier to control than so-called trance-gates. I just threw one together in Reaktor but there are tons available for free (I can't recommend a specific one because, like I said, I just made mine).

That is a good idea!!! So, I assume it just turns the MIDI notes off and on in real time? I will look around on Google to see if I can find one!

Thanks!

Not quite, no. You use the MIDI gate as an effect on an audio track (or VST output), and you control the gate with MIDI notes.

Different MIDI gates have different strategies; a really basic one would just be to open the gate when you're playing a MIDI note and close it otherwise. Other gates use either the note number or the velocity to control the open-ness (which could be used sort of like a poor-man's side-chain compressor). Still others might use the note number or other MIDI signals to control the envelope of the gate (how long it takes to open/close, etc.) Might even be mapped to filters or something, that's one of the things I did in Reaktor.

Bottom line is that it can do everything a trance "gate" can (just make a bar of MIDI data and loop it umpteen times). But you have much more fine-grained control; trance gates typically are 1/16th or 1/32nd resolution max, MIDI gates are only constrained by the MIDI clock. And of course it's much easier to change the pattern with a MIDI gate.

I think Dfx has one although it might not be the best. Cubase has one of its own if you use that. There's a few on KVR and, failing that, as you said, Google.

Ah, ok. That makes sense! It's sort of like using Absynth as an effects plugin where you have to have the output of the MIDI go to the input of the Absynth effects plugin. In this case, I would just route the MIDI to the input of the gate effect plugin in my audio track. I know I just basically repeated what you said, but it helped me understand

Thanks alot!!! I appreciate it!

Edit: I got the DFX Midi-Gater to work. Would you happen to have any MIDIs of some cool gates you wouldn't mind sharing? I have some patterns I will convert over and can share with you later.
