I didn't find anything like this with a quick search. Not sure if the term is correct either though.. (I'm not native english speaker)

Anyway, I can't be the only one doing this? I basically import any track I like into cubase, and start working on reproducing it faithfully. The sounds are the only thing I may alter because it's sometimes very hard to achieve similar sounds.

Do you think it useless doing this? When my inspiration is missing, it's great to be able to finish some track anyway. I never play the tracks to anyone, they're for my ears and practice only. I've heard someone claim that doing this your tracks begin to sound like everybody else.. I don't think this is a problem as long as you keep doing tracks of various styles and artists.

This just seems to me like a great way to gain experience on working on the best tracks you can think of. What do you all think?

It's a superb idea IMO. You'll learn a lot in attempting to re-create released tracks, and as you mentioned it keeps you producing and practicing despite being out of ideas.

Your tracks will start to take on a life of their own, whether you copy something else or not, so don't worry about them starting to sound like anyone else.

I've started reworks of a couple of tracks, and each time it's been awesome taking the sounds I made (close but no cigar) and starting a fresh original track with them. It's awesome to start composing a tune when you've already got a lot of work done with your sounds - makes it really quick. I'd recommend it for sure

I did Oceanlab - Satellite a while back. It was alot of fun.

Yeah it's true what pho mo said, it's very inspiring to start a new track when the sounds are already tweaked to work together.

I've also done remixes of my favourite tracks, but that's a little different. You're not trying to recreate the exact sound of the original and some new parts must be composed, so it's more like starting a new track and not as educational imo.

i started a remix of stargazing and advanced for some odd reason. i dont feel like completing them but the main parts were composed.

i dont normally do this but the other day i was having an argument with a mate, and he basically said i cudnt make "the egg,by david guetta"( it was the tune on the cd player at the time ) and that fruity was crap for making tunes(he just does mash ups btw)so i spent a couple of hour with him showing him what fruity can do with little ease once you learn how to use it!

i used 1 instance of v station for bass and 2 of vanguard for synth leads and all fruity effects. and i knicked the guitar of david bless him

he ended up saying it was shit, but for a couple of hours playing around whilst drinking i thought it was good

i think doing this sort of thing is a fantastic idea. something perhaps more people should try and do. if you can create sounds you hear in other songs...the more familiar you will be with the equipment and the more likely you'll be able to manipulate it into what you want for your own work. not only that but you also get to see how songs are constructed. seeing how things are put together and you really learn to listen for subtlties in production...

so yeah i think it's a wonderful idea...
