Arrow What size MIDI keyboard?

Sorry for the newb question guys. I have no friends into this sort of thing so I have no one to ask for advice.

So I have finally decided I wanted to start messing around and attempt to dj/produce. I really want to learn Ableton live 7 which I'm slowly working on.

I went out and bought the M-Audio Axiom 25. Now I do like the little guy and I like the size, but I really think I should return it for the 49 key version.

Although I can't really play the keyboard having the 49 key version would at least let me try to learn it.

And it has a few more controls on it, thinking about the level controls it has.

So what do you think, although I can't play the keyboard and prob going to just use it to launch clips and such should I spent more money (broke college kid) or just stick with this little guy and learn the program and such at least on it?

Thanks!

if you ever do decide to work on your fingering technique you'll want a 5+ octave keyboard(61 key)... if not then stick with whatever you're comfortable with.

A 49-key (or larger) will make it much easier to learn to play. It will also make much easier to audition sounds without having to constantly hit the octave +/- button.

for dance music, 25 keys is enough for most things. leads won't really go beyond 2 octaves, but pads will need more.

49 keys will be safe for 99% purposes. i play piano and have only 49 keys myself. infact, i am pretty sure beethoven was the only classical composer of that era to use more than 49 keys (he used 72). chopin, bach and mozart i am pretty sure all used 49 key harpsichords. most contemporary music can definately be played on 49.

Wow I should have asked this question a long long time ago. My 25 Key has been shitting me for quite some time and was gunna go for some big ass keyboard that would barely fit on my desk. Looks like 49 is the way to go.

Cheers.
